Adopted shelter dogs? Would you please look there first if you want a dog!?

I just thought that with SO many questions here on Y.A. like...what dog should I get? Where can I find a ___ breeder? That this would be a good opportunity to let people know that theres a good chance that what your looking for just might be sitting down at the animal shelter waiting on 'death row' Why not go look and save a life?

If you have a dog that you adopted from a shelter please post pictures!!!

When I decided that I wanted a poodle the first place I looked was our local shelter...there was a small matted up dog there that they called a "Poodle Mix" with a question mark....

I adopted her, shaved her down, and here she is several months later after her hair grew back and I could give her a decent poodle clip:

She was left behind when her former owners moved away, so nieghbors called animal control. She was on death row with only a few days left.

Would love to see others post shelter pics

She was about 1 1/2 years when these were taken- she's a Brittany Spaniel/ Lab mix.

Here's 2 pups that were recently rescued from death row in Kentucky and sent to our shelter:

These Beagle/Dachshund mixes were 6 weeks old when they arrived and 8 weeks old when both were adopted. Their mother was not surrendered with them and we assume that she's still at the BYB's house pumping out more puppies.

I have hundreds of other pics at home (35mm) of shelter animals I've met over the years....

Thanks for your help in promoting adoption! : )

Thank you puff...he is the biggest sweetheart too! : )

She's a cutie.

Where I live, the shelters are not no-kill shelters, so the dogs there really are living on borrowed time. I rarely see puppies in our shelters here. Usually it's a full grown dog whose owner has died or is no longer able to properly care for a dog, or a dog that became a "behavior problem" because its owners knew nothing about how to raise the dog properly. Some of the dogs were vicious, but most of them were just overgrown puppies who craved affection and attention.

I had a shelter dog for years. She was a Lab-Shepherd mix (at least that's what she looked like) and she was a good dog. The North Shore Animal League on Long Island, NY is a terrific place to find a shelter puppy if you live around there and don't want to adopt an adult dog. Though they have adult dogs there too and some of them, especially those whose owners have died, would break your heart. They seem so sad and confused.

I don't know if I'll always be able to live in a house, but as long as I do, I want a dog. I wish apartment house landlords were more willing to let people have dogs or cats.

EDIT: King is beautiful!

Yes, you are so right! There are so many wonderful pets waiting for homes at the shelters!

Here is a picture of my two dogs that we adopted from the pound. Brock is the black lab and King is the black lab/boxer mix. They are true sweethearts! Brock was picked up as a stray and he shows signs of abuse. King was forfeited to the shelter five times (by the same owner...) before we found him and brought him home.

And this was our Siamese mix cat we also adopted from the pound...

I also have Sadie how is a 100% APBT game bred~ ahe was being used as a breeding bi*** before I took her away from the guy. She had been starved and only given food 2 weeks before he would breed her and then starved again once the pups were 6 weeks, she was also tied in the guys backyard on a boat chain with about 20 other dogs.

Sorry no pics at the moment but just over 2 weeks ago i adopted a mini dachshund (doxie, sausage dog etc) his about 3yo his black and red (tan) a he has taken to me like a duck to water. we are still adjusting to one another and trying to get into a routine, but i just can't imagine life without my little pound puppy

am a single woman who works full time shift work, I adopted through pet rescue.

i found this breed (i had seen dachshunds before) by taking a test, it was one of the result to which breed most suits my situation (i have added the link) then did the research on the breed (partly through the other link.

in my case i got exactly what i wanted my dog came to me house trained, knowing his basic comands, desexed, microchiped, vaccinated, wormed and vet checked.

being a 3yo he is out of that digging, chewing, peeing destructive stage.

and the joy of an older dog for me is the responsibility is lessened by the fact he is already trained and house broken which means more time can be spent bonding and playing instead of obedience classes

my family has always had big dogs we've had a rotti, an Irish wolfhound, kelpies and border collies. i have recently purchased my own home and have a 1/4 acer area for a dog. I thought i would get a big dog because that's all I've ever had and I'm not a fan of yappers i need a dog who barks.

But when I adopted my dachshund from a rescue group. i felt bad because here i am with all this space and a dog that thinks his my shadow.

but my little boy is what suits me and my situation (he has a big dog bark), with time constraints such as work, and being single.

p.s good on you for adopting - you should pat yourself on the back - welcome to parenthood of the 4 legged kids

Adopted shelter dogs? Would you please look there first if you want a dog!?

I dont know a dog... I own cats... adopted as adults from the shelter (and 2 that were left here by their former owner).

I not only encourage people to adopt from shelters, I encourage them to consider adult animals - who are often over looked simply because they are a year old..

I know many people get pups and kittens because they are cute, and later get rid of them because they are too crazy, or too much work, etc...
