A second dog?

Im going to get a second dog later in the year and right now I have a Shih-Tzu. We don't want another Shih-Tzu, because their hair is hard to take care of (even though they are so adorable!! =]) But my parents will only allow another small dog like a Shih Tzu and it cant be a hyper dog or one that barks a lot. It would be great if it would be friendy with other dogs and people. So..... Thanks :-D

JUst watch your rescues and shelters. Get involved wth your local rescue and foster small dogs till the one you can't let go comes along.

Shih Tzus aren't hard to maintain unless you are trying to keep them in a long show coat. If you get them clipped every 4-6 weeks, they are very easy.

A shelter is a good place to look for another dog.

If you want a specific breed, my recommendation is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They have to be brushed as their coats are longer but don't require clipping like a shih tzu if that is the grooming problem you want to avoid. They are low bark, friendly and not hyper.

Small breeds are normally yip yapping little things, its just the way they have been bred in the US but I have a maltese and had one before him, they are great dogs but almost all small dogs have high energy because most small dogs were bred to be mousers. Pomerianians (sp) are good because they where meant to be lap dogs. But keep your eyes on the shelters and research a bunch of different breeds. I would find a trainer and go over your daily routines with them, they can point out a breed that you might not have heard of that would be perfect for you.

Yorkshire Terrier, they are kind dogs that don't bark.

I have 4 Shih Tzu's, you should get another one, they are the best breed!

i think you should get a female dog because they dont bark at much, or why dont you get a cat? they are quiet and there are some that even dont shed at all. i wish you the best of luck with your dog(s). hope you listen to my segesstions.

Most smaller dogs are going to bark a lot and almost every puppy I have ever met is hyper at times, so I don't think you can take that into consideration.

On the other hand, I think that a yorkie, or maltese might be good for you. I know someone with two yorkies, and have had 3 friends who have had maltese, and they were all very good around children and quite peaceful once they were in their adult years.

The best choice, however, might be to just check out the shelters. I bet you could find a young adult dog (about 7-10 months) that would be housetrained and a lot less hyper than a puppy (and a lot less work!). Check it out :)
