My new Puppy(dog) hates the Groomer--Advice Please!?

I have a new puppy(1 year and 4mths old) and he is terrified of the groomer, is this somthing he will get over oh will I have to live with a "shaggy" dog. He is a beagle/Terrier mix. I can't even clip the hair around his eyes without his throwing a fit.

find a different groomer; instinct runs deeper than we know

At 1 year and 4 months, he is no longer a puppy.

If you have a good groomer, he should eventually get over it.

He is afraid you'll poke his eye out or cut him. Mabey take him to a pro and let them deal with out.

At 1 yr %26amp; 4 months, your dog is technically no longer a "puppy," though of course he still may act it! As a grooming assistant, I can tell you that a dog this age who has never been to the groomer can be tricky to groom at first. It's completely normal that your dog is terrified - the sounds, the feelings, the strangers handling it...it can be overwhelming. The key, here, is to find a groomer who is willing to work with the dog. Yes, the dog will be a handful - I've seen it countless times - but unless he starts biting at the clippers or flat out going after the groomer, there really is no reason that the groomer can't work with him. I work with some very talented groomers who are very good with scared dogs, and are also good at being stern, cautious, and loving at the same time.

My advice would be to talk to friends with dogs, or to call your vet to get some groomer recommendations. When you talk to the groomer, let them know what behavior you've seen in your dog. A good groomer should be willing to meet the dog, and assess them - if they don't think they can handle him, they'll tell you. Worst case scenario is that you'll have to take your dog to the vet to be sedated and groomed, a rare but necessary step needed for some pups.

Then find another groomer, one who will not get rough with the dog for being afraid. There are groomers who will patiently work with a dog to help him overcome his fear - and this is not done by force. Ask around, post this question on your local Craigslist section - you'll find a kind groomer.

how long have you had this dog????? start by practice grooming him yourself,,, no scissors involved... bath him, give treats while doing it.... then dry him with a towel,, again treats while doing it,,, then brush him,,, again treats while doing it.....touch every part of his body.... eyes, ears, nose,, legs, toes, between toes,, belly, butt, tail,,,, every part...... after a few times of practice grooming he will be more comfortable with the sensations...... also introduce the sounds of running water and when drying him off the sound of a hair dryer.... do not dry him with it ,,, just turn it on while you dry him with a towel.... he will calm down after a moment, continue with treats...
