Dog burnt on back.?

My boxer was burnt on its back with scalding water 4 months ago. The burn has still not healed properly, and she keeps splitting the skin. I have tried all types of burn creams and the like. I can't keep a bandage over it as she pulls it off, I am also worried about sun burn on the wound (the hair still hasn't grown back). Has anyone else had this happen to their dog. If so please let me know how things turned out.

Thanks for your help.

Dog burnt on back.?

With hot water burns,, in animals because of the hair,, They are generally SERIOUS third degree extensive and deep.. More than topical treatment is needed.. 4 months is TOO long,, normal course of events is the intial burn (redness) then a period of progressive death of the tissues,, this can take several days to a week,, and it is only at this point that the extent of the burn can be determined,, at this point,, cleaning debriding of the tissues is needed,, suportive care of the wound bed,, with propper wet on wet or collagen bandages,, changed frequently..and in a lot of cases surgery to close the wound as much as possible depending on location is also needed.. This generally is 4-6 weeks NOT months..

So back to the vet,,

She may have some ofther condition that is causing this,, infection? systemic medications may be needed.. also with this type of burn and location..Hydro therapy,, is possible,,may be needed.. as far as bandages,, with the back a larger bandage,, is generally placed over the whole body (mid section) they can be sutured or stapled in place, just tying to tape a small bandage does not work.. as for pulling it off She WILL NEED AN E Collar,,, to prevent bandage removal,, and also prevent her from licking chewing the area,, that in itself will prevent the propper healing..

What did the vet recommed? at this poing 4 month this should have been healed,, so time to have the dog rechecked,, and consider additional treatment other then topical creams.. Burn creams are Generally NOT used in dogs.. esp for this kind of burn.. so kinda suprised they recommeded it?

unfortunlat a hot water burn in dogs,, do often appear all that bad at first.. unfortunaly this does lead to a lot of pet owners not seeking medical care,, thinking it is like spilling some hot water on themselves,, But again because of the hair,, they often have SEVERE damage to the tissues,, and lots of tissue death after the event,, So I have seen a lot of water burns but it is often a while after,, and only when there has been so much delay in treatment that there is now so much scarring of the tissues,, that extensive surgery is needed,, at the vet I work for,, so kind of a shame..

At this point with her time to do a follow up with your vet because she should have been futher along with the wound healing,, if she keeps splitting the skin,, more aggressive treatment will be needed or it will really never heal and be uncomfortable for her,,,

She should be able to make a complete recovery,, and scaring should be able to be kept at a minimum to a small area that sun burn would not be too much of a concern unless the area is pink.. unpigmented skin vs is more likely to burn,, and also higher risk for developing skin cancer.. or other issues,, then the vet may recommend a pet safe sun screen applied...

good luck

Amanda

Did you take her to the vet when this happened or did you treat it yourself? Have you used an E-collar (lampshade) to prevent her fromn pulling the bandage off?

Regardless...I would take her to the vet. They should be able to recommend something to get her healed

I wouldn't worry about keeping a bandage on your dogs burn. When it comes to burns, the air is your friend. A strong scab is essential for healing. Keep antibacterial ointment on the wound. Keep the skin clean and dry, and she will start to scar any day now.
