My mum's dog is called Mops (obviously because she has hair like a mop) She is 14 and still loves to go to the park and try to run about. She is not eating, and drinking very little. She is my mum's soul companion and mum cannot bear for her to be put down. Mops is not suffering as she still seems to enjoy barking at the window and door when someone goes past and usual doggy things. Mum thinks that it is right to put her down but obviously does not want to. PLEASE no stupid answers just to get your points up. This is a serious question!!!!!
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
Sounds like Mops is ok for the moment. Keep a close eye on her (as you seem to be already).
It is never an easy decision as to the right time to have your dog put down, but it doesn't seem like now is the time.
If she seems to stop enjoying life - no longer taking an interest in things she used to. If she becomes incontinent (a bit controversial here, but it would be unpleasant for you and the dog to deal with regular soiling) then I would say it was time to say goodbye - but it is not that time yet.
You probably know that she won't be around for many more years simply because of her age, so I'd just say to spend time with her, make sure she has the time playing in the park etc. (although don't push her TOO hard). Take photos (you'll be glad of them when she is gone).
When the time does come to say goodbye, make sure someone she knows is with her. You want the last experience she has to be with you by her side. Above all, STAY STRONG. Dogs can sense emotion and she will be upset to see your tears so fight them back, HARD. Cry all you want once she has slipped away, but not before. She's been a loyal friend for 14 years - you owe her that.
I wish you the very best at this difficult time.

Sorry to read about your loss.
Sounds like you and your mum gave Mops a great life. Don't lose sight of that. Report It
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
I would just let it live out its life...Use this example to her if you have grandparents..You don't put down your grandparents just because they get old.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
The dog sounds like she doesn't need to be put down. I'd take her to the vet and get her checked out for her eating and drinking, but I wouldn't worry about having to have her put down. She sounds like she's still going strong.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
Why put her down if she is not sick? You don't kill a dog just because it is old. The dog will tell you when it is time and hopefully she will just go in her sleep. But dogs stop eating all together when they are sick and they lay around and don't bark and interact with others, don't put her down until she gives up on life.Keep her as long as you can.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
I had a dog called Willy he lived until he was 18 years old. He knew when he wanted to go to the vet for the last time. Mops is not ready yet.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
She is 14 and she is very old for a dog but she wont let herself starve take her to the vet see what he thinks if shes in alot of pain then do it but dont do it w/o a good reason she wont let herself starve
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
Don't put her down until it is obvious that she is suffering. Just like an old person, she doesn't want to walk far anymore and prefers to look out of the window instead ( my 76 year old neighbour does that too). Let her enjoy her twilight years by just being lazy and being looked after and loved.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
I would say take her to the vet. If nothing is wrong then maybe she's bored with her food and you are just not seeing he drink. Sit down with her and persuade her to eat. Don't put her to sleep unless she is suffering. She may just be depressed or going through a phase. Take her to a vet and they should be able to direct in what to do.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
Your best bet would be to take her to the vet regularly so he can keep an eye on her progress. As long as she's happy and not suffering then theres no reason to put her to sleep. Not eating is a concern though.Your mum may want to discuss options with the vet.See what he recommends with regards to that.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
14 is not very old for a dog. if you are worried please take Mops to the vets. They are more qualified than the folk on Yahoo Answers.
Give Mops a hug from me.
I am sure all will be well.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
this happend to my cat once but foutnatly we were frends with the vet. so we took him to the vet and he advised us to put him down.
personally i would see wat the vet says wether hes is very ill or just old but if he is in pain then i would have him put down its the kindest thing.
otherwise if its just oldage just let him be but treat him carfully and dnt expect him to be very active. as for food try butchers liver or somthing thats wat we feed our dogs as a treat and it works
hope u sort somthing out!
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
You need to take her to the vet and see what he says. If he can find nothing wrong then perhaps she just needs a tonic. If your mum is being realistic although she is obviously upset you must be brave as well and take the vets advice. I hope you can make the right decision for both your mum and Mops. I will be thinking about you!
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
I am sorry if this sounds like a stupid answer as I cannot understand WHY does mum want to put her down ? If she is happy and not in pain why ? So she is not eating as much ? Or drinking as much is that a good reason to get your soul companion put down ?
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
Sounds like the dog has some good life left in her. I would say leave things alone for now. My dog lived over 16 years when it was time for him to be put down I did not. I prayed to God to take him. I did not have the strength to let him go down by my decision. He did pass with the Lords hand which I was grateful. Sure I was hurt, cried etc. but it was by Gods will.. not mine and I was grateful for that.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
If you can be sure that the dog is not suffering then why put her down? Check with a vet and let your mum enjoy her while she can.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
Why put down a seemingly healthy dog? I don't see why you're asking the question.
How long has she been off her food? Have you taken her to the vet? She might have something simple like a mouth ulcer than means it hurts for her to eat. Please don't assume she in ready to go without taking her to the vets.
My last dog was very poorly at the end, he had a brain tumour and was having fits, it was EXTREMELY difficult for me to make the decision even though I knew he was unwell.
Speak to your Mum and tell her that you need a vets opinion, and then take it from there. Our vet was very honest, and advised us as best he could. Take professional advice and then think about the dog. If she is happy then leave her be, if she is suffering then you cannot let it continue.
Hope this helps

take the best care of her u can and let her die when shes ready.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
If Mops is not suffering, is able to walk about, use the bathroom on her own, etc, then let her live her life out until she gets to the point where she is obviously unable to do basic necessities of life such as walk on her own or is in noticeable pain and is suffering.
Spoil her in her last years, and let her enjoy her time left with her family!
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
why would u want to put her down just be patient with her make .have u taken her to the vet? is she sick .... and again i dont think there is no need to put her down just let her live life to the fullest and she will go when she needs to.so enjoy her and i hope evrything goes okay :D
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
I think if the dog is STILL running around and playing and seems to be healthy do not put her down. When was the last time your mother took Mops the the vet? She should probably get a check up and I would ask the vet why Mops isn't eating and not drinking enough. My grandmother has a 14 year old dog as well and he plays and barks and is still like a puppy. Unless there is some major problem I would allow Mops to live the life he loves: with your mother. :) Hope this helps!!
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
if she still has good spirite, give her the best life possiable, keep her pain free, comfortable and loved, you will know when the time is right or she goes in her sleep.best of luck -my dads black lab is now 15
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
Have you been to the vets to see if there's a reason why she's stopped eating and drinking? You should. To let her slowly starve to death is curel. You need a professional opinion and then make an informed decision.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
If she is active and has a good quality of life, no need to pts, the eating thing...yes dogs go off food sometimes, 5 to 6 days ok, 2 days for water only, check her teeth or have them checked, most older dogs who go off food have bad teeth or gums, may need a descale and polish, poss extractions at the vets....day procedure.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
It likely wouldn't hurt to take her to the vet for a check up and have the vet give a recommendation.
Otherwise, if Mops still is active and happy (and not suffering in pain), there's not really a reason to euthanize her.
Perhaps she's just going through a phase or, if it is indeed a sign that she's dying, there's nothing wrong with letting her die naturally and living out her remaining days happy and at home with her family.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
get her checked by a vet, they will be able to tell if shes suffering or not,
obviously no one likes to put their pet to sleep but sometimes its the kindest thing to do even if it's the hardest thing to do.
no vet will put a healthy animal to sleep so get her checked.

If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
i have a 14 yr old pug, he had the same problem, turned out his gums were just inflamed with his teeth falling out and stuff. the vet gave him some antibiotics and told us if he is in pain it is ok to give hima a baby aspirin. don't give the aspirin without going by the vet first though so it won't jurt the poor dog more than it already is. if she is still happy i wouldn't put her down. puggy is almost blind and can't hear but he loves life. but a trip to the vet is a must i would think. might even be cheaper for ya then puttin her down if all she needs is a shot or antibiotics. GOOD LUCK............... hope your mum and mopsy still have time together. would be nice to see a updated post on her
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
Because she's not eating could be simply that she has an upset stomach. If she is not eating at all then ask the vet to take a look. I've known elderly pets whose food consumption goes down as they age, so take a look, is it that she just isn't eating as much as she used or is she not eating at all. If she is eating canned (wet food) she may not require as much water as you think. Remember the wet food has water in it and can supply a fair amount of fluids without added water.
Ask yourself these questions. Is she in pain? Does her quality of life seem severely diminished? If your answer to both of these questions is no and your mother is happy with her pet's behavior then why rush the inevitable.
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
Think about it this way when you get old and not too well should you be put down ? As long as mops is not suffering let her enjoy her life , why not take her to the vet for a check up ?
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
i think if she was suffering go to the vets but if shes not suffering keep a eye on her and see how she goes hope things work out xxxx
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
When the day comes when Mops no longer enjoys her life and is obviously in pain or distress then you will know. When it is time you will know.
As a pet groomer I have been ask if it was time to have a dog euthanized and all I could tell them is what I said earlier. When it time you will know.
I have always carried some sort of guilt after it was all said and done but deep in my heart I know I did the right thing. I just wish that we could do the same for us humans as well. When life is no longer a joy %26amp; all that's left is pain %26amp; suffering it is time to meet our maker.
You will know.
Blessings
If you had a 14 year old dog, what would you do???
I had a fourteen year old dog who started to change near the end. She had a very recent check-up and her health seemed normal for her age. But she had begun to tire very easily when we went for walks. That wasn't like her at all. She had always loved to walk and run with me. One morning she just woke up dead. That is to say, one night I went to bed, and she went to sleep in her bed but the next morning I woke up and she didn't. It was a terrible loss because she was a great dog and had been my buddy for 14 years. It was at least a year before I could even think about getting another dog. She will always be in my heart. But I did get through the grief and I have two young dogs now.
