My dog has a weird rash...?

I adopted a Westie/Maltipoo about a month ago from the SPCA. Two days ago I noticed a rash on his left side (towards the back, but not on his leg). There's an area that's about the size of a golf ball where there's no hair (I'm assuming he's chewed it) and little red bumps. I've been trying hard to make sure he does not itch/bite the area.

I've heard it might be an allergic reaction to the rabies shot they gave him just before I brought him home. I was also told it could be my dog-shampoo. My parents' dog has had hotspots before, and this does not look like the hotspots I have seen.

Can I put neosporin on a dog? And if so, what's the best way to make sure he doesn't lick it off?

Any ideas as to what else might be wrong with him? How long do I wait before I call the vet?

Thank you!!

Even if you want to skip the meds, it is best to take him in to the vet and get a quick diagnosis. That way you will be sure it is something that can be treated at home, and make sure before you spend the money it will even help. Good luck!! :-)

My dog has a weird rash...?

sounds like an allergic reaction to something. call a vet and ask them about giving him a benedryl.

You could probably give your dog some children's benadryl over the weekend and see if that helps. Also, omega fatty acids (can be bought as a food supplement or a spray) will help thicken your dog's skin to protect against future irritations. If not, make an appointment or see your vet this week.

Could be a hot spot, could be mange, there's no way for us to know without seeing it.

Just make sure your dog doesn't chew at it, and I wouldn't recommend putting anything on it right now.

You could at least call the Vet and ask for their opinion, and they can give you recommendations as to what you should/could put on it, and if you should just leave it alone.

If you have or can borrow an e-collar, use one of those.

Use a warm compress on it, and try not to touch it, or treat it yourself.

possibility it could be mange the hair falls out and its contagious towards other dogs. you should have him checked out im sure since you got him from the shelter they can have a look at it for free or for a fair price...

never hurts to give them a call

My dog has a weird rash...?

could be a hot spot, which is a bacterial infection of the skin that can get very bad very quickly. Probably safest to vet the dog.

My dog has a weird rash...?

sorry.. but it still sounds like hot-spots or allergies to me..

(hot spots are the common result of allergies) maybe he did have it before or its from treats??

Oatmeal shampoo is the best for dogs with skin problems...

yes it could be a reaction to the shot.. but that was 1 month ago so I think not...

dogs can develop allergies at any time - sometimes as the result of stress..

I would call the SPCA to check his old file just to see if there was any histroy of this reported...

My dog has a weird rash...?

well, I like the answers so far.....he may have a simple case of perhaps mites? Yes, dogs can get these too, just like humans. Change the dog shampoo, in case of a reaction, no perfumes, just regular dog shampoo. Don't put anything on the spot except for vaseline. This has no harmful additives like neosporin, and it will soften the skin and if he licks it, it won't harm him. If it doesn't clear up in about a week, take him to the vet and have it checked out. Reactions to shots normally take 5-7 days.
