My dog is an 11 month old yorkie silky mix.
Before she went to the kennel she:
-was a heavy biter (something i was at my wits end with)
-was not telling me when she has to go to the bathroom while outside of her crate (something i was ready to pull my hair out over)
- would get up during the night still to go potty
Now after the kennel.........
-her biting (not aggressive i might add..its more of a chewing on limbs problem) is pretty much gone
-she is doing so much better with housetraining and alerted me twice that she had to go by barking at me
- she has picked up the habit of sleeping in my bed due to shrieking cries at night... but when she sleeps in my bed, she doesnt wake me up at 2 in the morning to go to the bathroom.
Why did she come back from the kennel a better dog? I am training her more than ever to keep this good behavior. But what spawned this behavior? Extreme socialization perhaps? Maybe she just missed me so much she listens now?

Dogs teach each other. Your dog was allowed to run with a pack at the kennel, and se learned what they know. If you ever watch Cesar Milan's Dog Whisperer, he often takes out of control dogs to his training facility and allows them to spend a few weeks running with his pack. It teaches them how to establish a pecking order, how to work with others, and above all, how to respond to the alpha of the pack- the human.
Toy dogs are especially prone to being overly spoiled by their owners. Even if you try to train her, but you still spoil her, she'll never learn good manners. And no, it has nothing to do with her 'missing' you. She learned how to be a dog; dog's respond when they are told to do something. What you need to do is not so much train her as let her be a dog. Don't give her everything she wants. Make her sit down and wait for her food. If she tries to force herself on you for attention, push her away; only give her attention when you call her to you. Remember that however cute she is, she's not a human infant. Dogs need rules, discipline, and structure- not pampering.

The other dogs rubbed off on her.

no idea what happenes

how long was she at the kennel?
most good kennels are experienced with dogs and the dog probably got a bit of training/obedience training while she was at the kennel if it was any length of time.

She saw that the other dogs barked to go outside and so she learned from their behavior....Monkey see, Monkey Do!

I'm not sure why she would be better behaved. If she was in the kennel for a while, the people there may have had time to work with her on it. Some dogs are traumatized by being left by their owner and actually come back subdued or with worse behavior. You could ask the kennel if they did anything to work with her.

My guess is that the kennel had a professional trainer that either owns the kennel, or works there. With an outside force she learned fast, and has taken those good lessons home with her. She also learned from seeing the behavior of the other dogs at the kennel, since dogs are pack animals and she became part of another pack that would not accept her with her past bad habits.

I am sure that she was put on a routine. She was allowed food, the within 20 minutes was taken outside and the food was taken away. Few dogs will soil their crates and she did not want to soil the area in which she slept. Also, being confined at night promoted her ability to hold it until she was let out in the morning.
I doubt that the kennel personnel allowed her to mouth, bite and chew on them. Also possible that some nice person decided to work with her on manners while she was there.
Sounds like a win win for you and your pup.

you just made my day!!!!!...my dog is to go to a kennel for the first time this friday for 8 days while we are on vacation..he is an alpha male that has been fixed but still aggressive..he goes out all the time but will still come in a crap on the floor....i have been so worried about leaving him at a kennel but now i am hopeful...we made sure it is at a vet kennel so they will have the knowledge to deal with an alpha male dog....time will tell..

it's probably because she was around other dogs.dogs need a lot of attention, and they are eager to learn things.keep up with what you are doing now.

I think young dogs frequently or at least twice should go to outside "pet sitters" experienced in socializing dogs, before they are a year old, preferably with other dogs available to socialize with. They learn pack order/pecking order, they learn good behaviors from other dogs and they learn that in order to be rewarded for good behavior, they must behave. Alot of "shelter" dogs are very well behaved, they learn from their peers, they stop being destructive and learn how to sooothe themselves, how to bark to eliminate and where, how to not bite each other, because it hurts, etc. I am really glad this has helped your dog. I frequently socialize puppies for people, problem puppies, they go home a different dog and the dog is happier because the people are happier.

Since she came back a better behaved dog, why don't you go back to the kennel and ask them what they did? I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you.
Any group that handles dogs a lot has a lot of "tricks" that they use. Vets, groomers, kennels, etc.
Perhaps it was simply because they treated her like a dog.

People who deal with dogs daily as a job all have the same attitude .....they take no crapola from dogs....dogs sense this and behave accordingly.....when will folks learn that training is 85% attitude adjustment on the part of the owner.....

Maybe someone from the kennel worked with her during that time. Maybe someone took it upon them selves to take her home and train her in the evening. I would be sure to thank them and be sure to take her back there again. Recommend them to others. Some places may put a little extra effort into kenneling the dogs to get reference business and repeat customers. That is great that you found a place that cares.
