I have a 7 year old Jack Russel Terrier. She weights about 25 pounds, shes only supposed to weigh about 12. So she cant reach her itches...and she bites at her feet, because she cant reach them! Her front paws have hardly any hair left on them due to this! We take her to the vet, and they can't tell us anything! We put lotion on her stomach...[shes too hairy everywhere else], give her oatmeal baths, and Benadryl from time to time....but if you give her too many baths it dries out her skin...any more recomendations? suggestions? we brush her all the time, and pass her around scatching her, because if you start it she wont leave us alone! anything would help!

Being the right weight for her breed and age would be ideal. Otherwise clipping her nails might help. Or building her a rubbing post?

LOSE SOME WEIGHT obviously if she can't scratch herself DUH walk her.... excercise...She doesnt like being twice the size she is supposed to be. Burn off that extra weight and your dog can scratch herself

I cannot figure -- if you were itching your self raw you would go to the doctor.. What about your poor puppy.-- Jack is miserable....

the first thing is to get her to loose some of the weight off her that will help. Check what type of food you are feeding the dog? If it has wheat in it change to a food without. Check to see if you can find a flea on the dog. Some dog are very sensitive to flea bites.

It sounds like she might have allergies a vet can give her a shot once a month to take care of it. She could also have skin mites or mange if so a vet would have to medicate for that as well. Maybe you should have her looked at by your local DVM.

Maybe you can take her to another vet. Maybe she has a skin infection. You know what, give her garlic. Mix it in with her food. Garlic is a natural antibiotic and it kills any infections. Also I would rub aloe on her skin.
I'm not a vet but I do know this things do work. Don't brush her so much this will make her skin itch more i think. And it won't be a bad idea if you put her on a careful diet. Poor baby.
I hope she gets better. try looking in the Internet for more suggestions. Good Luck. I love Russel Terries, I had one.

Wow, don't give your dog garlic as someone suggested, it is toxic to dogs. Maybe you should find a new vet if the one you do see isn't recommending anything, to me it sounds like allergies. Which really needs to be seen by a vet, there are medications (steriods) to help control the itch, special shampoos, diets, and she may also need antibiotics. Find a new vet and make sure to ask questions, get your money's worth of services from them , you should be leaving with answers not more questions.

sounds just like my sister-in-law's jack russel. She is allergic to grass and wool. She tried everything to get her to stop scratching! The dog had an awful time before her owner figured it out. But now she goes to the vet once a month for a allergy shot and is so much better!
