What kind of dog ?

I have a 4 yr-old and a 3 month old, so we want a family dog....but it needs to be short haired for my boyfriend is allergic to pet hair. Any suggestions?

What kind of dog ?

lab

What kind of dog ?

weinermaner

What kind of dog ?

Poodles are said not to shed. Schnauzers might also be a good choice...short hair and do not need much grooming.

What kind of dog ?

Dachshund.

Be blessed in your search.

What kind of dog ?

depends on the size of your house, lifestyle and the size you are looking for, but I recommend a lab, (very good natured dogs, but needs frequent walks, and\or runs)

Great danes are also very sweet, but very large.

And I've heard good things about grayhounds too. And they have a mini grayhound if you want a smaller dog

What kind of dog ?

yea, get a winnie dog, dachaund.they are pretty cool dogs....also a boston terrier....I call 'em baseball head dogs....but a regular dog from the pound is so much more grateful to come home to anybody....good luck

What kind of dog ?

get an australian sheppard, best dog i have ever had, use a muzzle to train and shave it so theres no hair, my dog Puppy is 12 yrs old and loves my kids hes their best friend doesnt need a leash will sit outside a store over an hr to wait for u, they are just a bit hyper so the muzzle will help calm em down

What kind of dog ?

I just got a toy schnauzer 3 months ago and I love him. Toys are 6-11 lb miniatures are 12-20lb. They do not shed and are usually great with kids and families etc. The do require attention and training as they are very intelligent and hence need mental stimulation. To learn more there are lots of web sites I loved the breeder that I got my little guy at (see link below)

What kind of dog ?

I would suggest a poodle...preferably not the toy kind, as the children may be a little rough on one so small. Poodles are as close to non allergenic as you can get, don't shed much at all, and although they require a fair bit of grooming, they make exceptional family dogs. They are highly intelligent, and are excellent retrievers, so the kids could probably play fetch with such a dog. I hope this has helped your search.

What kind of dog ?

allergies are to dander usually.. not hair.. and infact most short haired dogs, like LABS actually shed ALOT...

however it is the Labrador Retreivers and Golden Labs (longer haired) who are considerd the BEST with kids.. known as "soft mouthed dogs" becuase they were bred to be patient and retrieve ducks gently in their mouth.. the are patient with kids and very gently

the dogs which are considerd "hypo-allergenic" are ALL LONG haired dogs, called non-shedding because thier hair is like people hair... it grows and grows and grows, so these dogs need frequent trips to the groomer for cuts - HOWEVER - most of these breeds are not always good with kids

Terriers are bred to hunt and therefore VERY mouth agressive and too active for a young family

Boxers are good with kids.. but again the dander issue - has boyfriend looked into allergy shots?

Shih Tzu is probably your best bet.. lower intelligence so rather laid back BUT becareful because sometimes they are not properly socialized and dont like kids (all dogs should be socialized with OBEDIENCE LESSONS)

dont get a puppy -%26gt; puppies are very MOUTH oriented and jumpy (will scratch or knock down kids) adult dogs know to leave when they want to be left alone...PLUS a puppy will need to be house trained.. this is very hard to do if you have 2 young kids.. and it isnt even easy without kids. Get an already housetrained adult dog of mixed breed perhaps..

so I suggest going to your local SPCA or animal shelter and asking if they have any housetrained adult dogs , that are good with kids... the boyfriend can take allergy shots so look into that option too....

I would suggest waiting till your youngest kid is older.. like even 2yrs old becuase a dog is alot of work.. and so are two kids.. and I dont want this to be a story that ends with the dog being dumped because somebody didnt realize being a parent is work and owning a dog is work...

kids and dogs (of any breed) should NEVER be left alone together - worst thing I hear is "my dog is so good, my kid can pull its ears and it wont do anything" this is BAD PARENTING.. a good parent would NEVER allow a child to treat a dog like this

poodle/golden retriever cross.. and unethical breeding but recently people are doing this intentionally to make money off a gimmick cross - calling them "golden doodles" you can usually get them at shelters for cheaper than from some idiot back yard breeder - or pet store (NEVER GET FROM A PET STORE) - either get from a SPCA or from a repuatable (purebred) dog breeder (one who has shown both parents to prove they are worthy of breeding)

get a mutt and get him to take shots or something.. or get a non-shedding mutt... preferably with some retriever genetics in it.. not terrier

What kind of dog ?

First thing, remember every dog shed's just some less than others. Any dog (breed) can be an excellent family pet. You just have to remember what the dog was bred for when you decide on the breed. Get online and do research. Also, you must remember is that a dog is an animal first, then a dog, then a breed, then a name. All dogs are dogs, (not breeds). All dogs will sniff/track like a Bloodhound, but the Bloodhound was bred to do this particular trait and will do it better than let's say a Dalmation). This was merely used as an example only. If you like big dogs, I have a female English Mastiff, (very short hair). She is our first, and is now 15 months old. She's coming along great. However, since you have little one's, if you choose to go with the larger breed always (and I mean Always), never leave your children alone with the big dog. They can get easily hurt just by getting knocked down. Also, again this goes for any breed dog/any size dog; exercise..weather it's for a 30 minute walk, jog, whatever, get him/her out there to exercise.

Also, socializing is #1. When you get your pup, sign him up for puppy class. You can't go wrong here. Good luck. And remember, you are the pack leader, let your puppy know this from the first day. Yes, he's going to be cute and cuddly, but bad habits are reinforced very easily if you are not careful.

Good luck.

What kind of dog ?

u might want to get a poodle because some are actually big. they don't shed either.

did u know: poodles were originally made for hunting birds because they can swim really good? they can swim to the other side of the creek with no problem and go get the bird.

What kind of dog ?

German shorthair, ( bird dog)

boxer

What kind of dog ?

a little poddle they are so cute he will love it

What kind of dog ?

look into Corgi's they great dogs and theyr small but not toy cup and usually do good with kids. Not to mention theyr so cute.

What kind of dog ?

Boxer

What kind of dog ?

labrador retrievers but i'm not sure if it's advisable since your kids are still too young and labrador's can get really big.

What kind of dog ?

I know that they're pretty big dogs, but a Bull Mastiff would be my recommendation.

They were originally bred to guard large estates - to knock an intruder down and make them stay right on that spot until their owner or whoever showed up to deal with it. So they're not prone to biting or attacking.

They are the laziest dogs on the planet, so they don't need a lot of room to run, just a yard they can step out into once in a while to relieve themselves.

They're intensely loyal and gentle mouthed, but fiercely protective when they feel they need to be. While they'll not usually bite anyone, their size alone can make someone believe that they would in a heartbeat.

Their hair is short and I've known several people who are allergic to dogs that have no problem being around them. They love kids if they're raised with them, and I even had one that taught my daughter to walk. She'd grab ahold of the loose fur at his neck, then he'd slowly stand up until she was standing next to him, and he'd take small steps so she could keep up with him. When she would tire, he'd lay back down slowly so that she didn't fall.

Their breeding taught them to be very patient, and they seem to understand that little kids need extra care.

Good luck choosing your family pet, and I hope you'll look into this breed as an option. They can be the sweetest and most adoring pets, and they don't feel the need to bark their heads off all the time.

winnie dog , my w d didn't bark but when he was a the door wanting back in after i didnt hear him come back up .

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

We just lost our 3 yr old labrador suddenly 1 1/2 weeks ago and we will be wanting to get a new puppy but one that stays small. I am from Australia so what are some good breeds that are avilable here.

I am 15 and usually at home when im not at school or at work(once aweek) but my mum is always at home, so there is always somebody there.

We want a small dog that stays small and does have very long hair (that requires much grooming).

We also don't want to pay a fortune so under $260 aussie dollars.

We like the look of a pomm x aussie terrior, but we want suggestions!!!!

And also what can I do to speed up the process of getting a new puppy. My mum does want a new dog but she is saying not just yet. How can i try to convince her to get one soon.

I am a big pet lover so is my family.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

ALL WILL BE APPRECIATED.

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

I am in Australia and personally love the Australian Kelpie. I suggest taking your mum to the RSPCA and I bet you come home with a dog.. there are hundreds of puppies and older dogs that need homes. They cost approx $250 and come all injections to date, wormed, flea treated and de sexed... They have big ones, long haired ones, short haired ones and male or female... go take your pick (and you might just find that the dog picks you)

Sorry about your Lab, :( so sad

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

Palmaranian... i dont know aussie dollars.

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

I have had a lot of large dogs and small dogs also....but the cutest and friendliest dog I ever had was a beagle. They are adorable...check them out.

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

Beagles are awesome smallish dogs. I don't know what they cost in Aus or how easy they are to find there.

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, pets are family in my household. I have a Jack Russel Terrier and she is very lovable, I recommend this breed. They are a very good lap dog and have short hair. A very good friendly watch dog also. It is a good dog for a household that will have someone there because they are very active, in a good way. I wouldn't give mine up for the world.

If your mom says she wants another puppy, I would go ahead and surprise her with one. You could check with your vet. They usually know breeders and you know you will get a healthy pup that way. Good luck with your search.

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

Im so sorry to hear about your lab. I currently own a yellow lab and my family decided to get a small dog also. We researched breeds and we decided on a Rat Terrier. We got a little girl and she is such a joy. Very protective, gets along great with other animals and the kids. She will only be 10lbs as an adult. Not this is the minature version. You can get the standard which is up to 35lbs.

Go to puppyfinders.com and check out the breed. It will give you information on it and breeders. They are considered a rare breed so you will definately be an origonal owning one! Grooming is so easy. Short hair and barely sheds.

Good luck on your pet search. Just remember to take your time and don't rush finding one. Make sure you heal before buying another one.

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. Then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

I am so sorry to hear what happend! Since you want a small dog you might want to look at a chiuahuah some come with really short hair and others don't. besides they are extremly small well some are!I actually have one myself and they are a great pleasure to have around.

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

why don't you try the animal welfare league or rspca, we got our purebred jacket russell from there. He cost $110, desexed and wormed.

There are always a lot of dogs looking for a loving home, and i'm sure it would help with the healing process with the lost of your much loved labrador.

good luck!!

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

Yorkshire Terriers (Yorkies) stay under 7 pounds. Mine is 4.5 pounds and is full grown. His hair is like human hair and does not shed. We groom him ourselves. He loves to be held and brushing him is just another part of holding him.

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

Be very careful in the switch from big dog to small dog. You will be expecting a small dog to do the same things that your big dog did. Smaller dogs take more attention in training. One has a tendency to pamper a small dog more, where a bigger dog they will "play" with more. They are both equally great as companions though. I have a small Yorkie. He has been the best dog for my four children, they dress him in doll clothes, fight over who gets to sleep with him and in general spend a lot of time with him. On the other hand my chocolate lab just died a month ago, and it is I that misses her the most. She was more of a trained dog and always did everything with me. Our Yorkie does not do any tricks and the only obedience "thing" he does is "sit". Both sizes are great to have, it will just take getting used to a new one.

If you want your Mom to get a new puppy, just have her go see a new litter of pups! No one can resist a real LIVE new baby!!!!! Tell her that you just want to see them, and I bet you may come home with a new dog!

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

I have a Cairn Terrier, as do my parents, and I can vouch that they are a GREAT dog! They are like a lab in a small dogs body-- atleast mine is! He loves going to the lake, he will hunt any animals (he LOVES squirrels), and he is the most loyal dog ever. Females usually are around 13-15 pounds, and Males around 16-20. They are very sturdy dogs, and do have long hair, although they do not shed. They have a very long life expectantcy (15-17 years) have little to no health problems besides seasonal allergies (which varies from dog to dog).

Getting a new small dog, our lab just died.?

Get a Yorkshire Terrier (yorkie)!!!! They make great pets and they fit your description of what you want in a dog.

Pet has problems with her hair were trying to figure out if its a side effect of medication or somet

She is an australain shepard about 11 years old (in human years not dog) shes taking deramaxx and M-Thyrozine, I looked up side effects of them online but didnt see anything about hair growth. Shes been taking them for atleast 2 years. My mom gets her hair cut about twice a year cause she sheds soo much hair in the house. She never had this problem before but since she last had her hair cut its been growing back strange. She has spots were its not growing and spots where its growing long but somewhat thin. This is only on her back and part of her side, on the rest of her body is growing back like normal. My mom thought it might be from her laying on concrete in her office but wouldnt make sense cause she doesnt lay on her back.

Pet has problems with her hair were trying to figure out if its a side effect of medication or something else?

Have you had her checked out by the vet? Sounds like fungus or something that she could have picked up at the groomer...

Pet has problems with her hair were trying to figure out if its a side effect of medication or something else?

Ask her vet. if she can take Omega 3 Fish Oil Vitamins!! If you poke a hole at the end of the vitamin, and poor the liquid on something she really likes to eat, she will love it!! It will help her skin and coat in a couple of weeks!! I did this because my adopted dog had heart worms when I adopted him, and the vet. told me to give this to him for his heart health, and it made his skin and coat so shiny and healthy, it was almost unbelievable!! It is worth a try for you too!! Good Luck, I hope this helps some!!!!

Pet has problems with her hair were trying to figure out if its a side effect of medication or something else?

I have a Keeshond that had the same problem. It seems that the older they get the more the hair resists growing normal. I had her recut down to even everything out and then gave her a tespoon of Brewer's yeast every other morning in her food and also applied a very small amount of tea tree oil to her skin once a week. In about a month her hair all grew back normal-thick and full as when she was a pup. I also spent a lot of time brushing it to encourage it to grow back. My Kee is 9 1/2 years old so pretty close to your dog's age and they are pretty close to having the same hair length and coat type. To handle some of the shedding issues try taking a carding comb-or a #40 clipping blade which are fairly inexpensive-and brush with that every 2 weeks in small areas at a time. You will be amazed at how much hair you get from just doing that-that can be done on any hair type and length. If you can't do it because of time or she won't sit still long enough most groom shops will do it for a small fee....it's called carding. Good luck and I hope this helps:%26gt;)

Pet has problems with her hair were trying to figure out if its a side effect of medication or something else?

DOGS DONT CATCH A FUNGAS AT THE GROOMERS.

That being said, let's get down to what's going on with hair growth on your dog. Normally you shave a dog then the hair grows back full %26amp; even. Then one time you shave it and it doesn't. This is a clue. A clue that your dog is not dealing with what ails it. Either the body is compensating by putting its energy into some other organ or illness (energy goes toward healing not fur growth), or your dog is becoming less able to tolerate its conditions (stressed). Your dog is on pain medication. For what? Arthritis? Your dog also has a Thyroid problem. These are the two already known conditions. Either those two things have become worse (maybe the dog is in more pain or thyroid med is off) or something else needs treated now. Basically the lack of fur growth happens in three situations: the dog is old, the dog is sick, or the dog has whelped recently.

Pet has problems with her hair were trying to figure out if its a side effect of medication or something else?

Get some Salmon oil from an all natural store this will help her coat, and when you take her to the groomers, bring your own shampoo she may be allergic to the stuff they are using on her. She may also have hot spots but that normally includes itching.

On the Salmon oil call the vet to assure she can have it, and it wont interfere with anything shes on right now.

For shamppoo i would reccomend an all natural one. Myabe an oatmeal one, as thats good for her skin, and her coat.

My family hates my dog?! HELP?

I've had a dog for 2 years now its a Pomeranian and she is adorable, shes always friendly and loves everyone. My mom used to be okay about it. But ever since my aunt has come my mom is really cruel to her (my aunt says negative things about dogs to her) such as how dirty, disgusting and unclean they are. Me and my grandpa love her so we pick her up and hug her and do whatever we like because shes like a baby to my grandpa and me, My family however yells at us for it and laughs and talks about it behind our back about how crazy and insane we are. Now we are getting a home and my aunt told the real estate agent that we dont want the dog in the house (she said this secretly i overheard) ... which make me mad because if my dog cant live in the house then i wont either. My aunt also gives mean looks to my dog i have seen several times. And then she says she loves her its clearly a lie.

She (my aunt) used to have a dog and i even saw her putting him in her lap and combing his hair.

My family hates my dog?! HELP?

You need to sit down with your family and talk to them.

I know, I know... "That's what they all say..."

But could you imagine the surprise on your mom's face when you say that YOU need to "have a talk" with HER? She'll have to listen to you if you get her to sit down on the coutch for a few mintues. Be firm, but not forceful (insist that she sit down and talk with you, but don't yell at her to sit down).

Just ask her straightforward: "Do you not like my dog? Because I'm getting the impression that you don't." Talk to her about what you think is going on, and ask her for her point of view. I agree with Peyton, you need to let them know that you love and care for this dog, and they should respect that. Once you both understand each other, negotiations will be easy!

Good luck!

-Joe

My family hates my dog?! HELP?

I so know what you mean sweetie!.... I have a great aunt that made remarks about my dog... faces and just hates animals and sure doesnt like them in the house as my dog is LOL hes a cute small bichon and is so friendly and doesnt shed like most dogs LOL thats a plus ... LOL anyway, the heck w/ what they think. you cant change people they have to change themselves and OH WELL about those two faced people..... LOL about you and your grandpa... sounds like me again b/c my grandpa LOVES my dog and cat he LOVES ANIMALS ..... LOL Good luck! Just wanted to let you know you arent alone.

My family hates my dog?! HELP?

You really have very little power here. I would enlist the help of your grandfather in talking to your mother about this. Promise that you will wash the dog every week, and clean up after him (including his poopies outside) - then be sure you do it. Let your mom handle your aunt. Hope it goes well for you.

My family hates my dog?! HELP?

I pray that the dog that ran away is in a better place. I am an animal lover %26amp; I pray against those that treat animals with any type of cruelty. I have a pomeranian %26amp; her name is PISSY. She is the pet of my sister who passed away last year. I took both of her pomeraniians %26amp; tried to take the 3rd one. I got there too late. But the 3rd one is in good hands. People have issues some are other people issues, some are animal issues. it hurts me to see or hear of an animal or child being hurt. Those most near us are the ones who hurt us. Try to stay positive %26amp; ignore the ugly stuff going on. If you have to a better place for your pet - do it. It will always hurt but it is better that you get your pet to a place where he or she will be taken care of. If push comes to shove - you can email me %26amp; we can take possibly about getting your pet to a good place. But try all you can to hold on to your beloved pet but remember it is better that you choose a place than being forced to a place.

My family hates my dog?! HELP?

It almost sounds like jelousy to me, but do NOT say that to them! Do your best to keep the dog out of their way, bathe him often, excercise him so he isn't hyper, and do whatever you can to not give your aunt and mom any reasons to complain. At least you have your grandad on your side. That should help.

My family hates my dog?! HELP?

Actually dogs are pretty filthy...and I love both of mine. But they go outside and roll in feces, they EAT feces. Think about that next time your's gives you "kisses". Maybe if you looked at dogs realistically rather in a fantasy you'd understand your aunt and mom a little better.

Shall i put my dog to sleep?, he is 9 yrs old and ill?

hi my name is andy, i have a 9 yr old collie cross, we have just found out he has cussions desease and started loosing his hair,we were told to use evening primerose oil and it worked, his hair started growing back. yesterday he was fine, running around playing barking. today he is being sick and his poo is very runny has very bad wind and sleeping all day,,,his vomit is bright yellow and he wont bark when some-one comes to the door.........do u think this is to do with the cussions or is it just a stomach bug...i have 3 children and dont want the kids to see him suffer.....any info will be of great help.

thankyou

a very worried dog owner.

Shall i put my dog to sleep?, he is 9 yrs old and ill?

well, i'd talk to your vet and see what they think. if the vet thinks that he can recover then let the dog live. if the vet thinks that the dog will continue to deteriorate and will not recover, then yiou should probably get him put down.

wait and see how he is tomorrow, maybe he's just having a bad day.

Shall i put my dog to sleep?, he is 9 yrs old and ill?

I would really take Andy to the vets, veterinarian (most of the time) are very good at deciding whether the dog will get better or not. I'm sorry to hear about your dog.

Good luck

Is my female dog pregnant when my vet said it was unlikely? part two?

Thank you to everyone that offered their advice. I would just like to clarify that I live in Spain so cannot rely on local charities and organisations as they are already overwhelmed. I have also checked all of my dogs for chips and tried to reunite them with their owners, only one was chipped and the owner has changed his number. The procedure is to take them to the Townhall and leave them there and denounce the owner and wait for a period of about 3 months before I can then 'adopt' the dog legally. In the case of the one that is chipped, she is terminally ill and needs a warm loving home, not to be locked up and held whilst her owner fails to retrieve her. Just yesterday I found a yorkie outside my house and he was cold, wet and had badly matted fur. I took him in, bathed him, cut his hair (his legs were covered with wire and twigs) and fed him and I have found him a new home this morning. I will be taking my possibly pregnant ***** to the vets this week so watch for installment 3!

Is my female dog pregnant when my vet said it was unlikely? part two?

I have not read the first installment but you deserve a medal. I hope evrything turns out OK for you and someone looks after you as you look after the dogs. But then again a dog is the most faithful friend you can have. All the best and carry on doing your great work.

Is my female dog pregnant when my vet said it was unlikely? part two?

thanks for the update why not try to set up a charity yourself to help with this a lot of english people go to spain and we are supposed to be a nation of animal lovers do it properly or you wont get any help at all just a lot of trouble

Is my female dog pregnant when my vet said it was unlikely? part two?

Sounds like you are turning into the local animal rescue centre!!

Hope it all goes well.

Is my female dog pregnant when my vet said it was unlikely? part two?

Hi,thank goodness there is people like you in this world.I would keep her never mind her being gaged for 3 months they should gage the owners.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

My boyfriend and I are wanting to buy a dog. We both like larger dogs but we can't seem to agree on which one to have! He wants a Great Dane. I myself, being 4'11", want something the size of a pit bull. We want something with short hair, energy and on the medium large side of the "doggy spectrum". Any suggestions?

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

A female Rottweiler. They are shorthaired, and a female will run 90-100 lbs. That sounds big, but they truly are "gentle giants" and, provided you give your rottie proper training (DO NOT LEAVE THEM CHAINED UP), they are EXTREMELY gentle. I have literally left a three-year-old and five-year-old together with my Rott, and when I returned from a task on the other side of the yard, she was laying on her back, happily getting her belly rubbed, foot going full-speed. On the other hand, I'd rather walk barefoot over a bed of nails than leave the kids I babysit alone with my mother's Chihuahua - I'd come back and find one bleeding and missing a substantial amount of skin.

Don't believe the media hype - while Rotts do make excellent police and guard dogs, the "killer dogs" you hear about in the news are often abused, neglected, or improperly trained. Basic housetraining - sit, stay, heel, come, lay down - is perfectly fine for a Rott. They are fiercely loyal and will protect your home instinctively, though they'll hardly rip an intruder limb from limb unless trained to do so. Do, however, go to a breeder who guarantees good temperament.

Just know that they love to play and are very social, so you want to take them on lots of walks to meet other people and dogs, and from the very earliest chance you get, make sure you teach them not to nip. What is a harmless, "cute" nip when they are puppies, could cost you a couple of fingers when they're full-grown if they're not gently but firmly trained out of it. They're just THAT BIG. Don't EVER, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, hit a rott, however. A very stern "Kyra, no! No bite!" works much better, and you don't run the risk that the animal will turn on you because of pain or fear.

Rotties are highly intelligent - when working with Kyra, all I have to do is snap my fingers, say "Kyra - here!" and point to my side, and bam - she's THERE.

Just one word of caution: if you decide to get a rottie, keep in mind that you will not choose your dog. Your dog will choose you. Kyra lives with my mother (I'm in college and therefore cannot have a dog), but there is absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind that she's my dog. Or rather, I'm her human. She's never growled or nipped at my mum (in fact, I don't think she's ever growled or nipped at *anybody,* except some weird guy who tried to get in the house when I was home alone last year), but she's unruly when I'm not home. My mum could *never* take Kyra out in the yard without a leash - she'd run away. Me? I take her out, take off the leash, and let her romp. She knows that when I want her, I'll call her.

Let the dog pick you, and you'll have an *incredible* lifelong bond with the animal. They're amazing animals!

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

GOLDEN RETRIEVER, except the long hair. So i would recomend a lab or pointer! THAT DOG IS SO ENERGETIC! i have a great dane and you really have to be careful if you live in a colder climate becuz her tail will litterally wip you. Our Great Dane is way to big for the house and when she's in it she can easily access everything. so take that into thought. Pointer and labs are average size dogs that have the energy of a puppy until they get older.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

Labrador they are wonderful dogs. They are active and smart.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

Get a shelter mutt

They are temperment tested, inexpensive and come with lots of "extras".

They have all types, sizes, shapes, hair coats, colors, patterns, everything you could want.

And your saving a life too.

Can't beat that.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

As far as large dogs go, I too would agree with a Great Dane, they're wonderul dogs with a grand temperment. But if not, I'd say go with an Austrailian Sheperd.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

weimaraner

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

great danes are actually couch potatos where as pit bulls are more dominating and harder to controll....try something more the size of a pit bull with the attitude of a great dane that would be best.........

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

I would suggest you hit the library and look over the dog breed books to begin with. There is a lot more to consider besides size. And do you have the room and yard for a larger dog to get good exercise, fenced yard? Each breed has its temperament.

A boxer might suit both of you. Do your research first though. And please consider a breed rescue!!

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

I have always had great luck with German Shepherds

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

I suggest a chow however they are somewhat shaggy but they are unbeatable for home security reasons, gentle, brainy, and devoted to their 'folks' I would never consider a pit bulldog they are destruction on the loose if agitated and even when unprovoked there is always a danger of them attacking.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

I have a shih-tzu, which fits me and my family really well. We're asian, and our dog is asian!

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

one remember a dog is like a kid be sure yall one on ok, well there is a website that helps what type of dog best fits your but ill give that to you in a sec, and two ill give you some breeds that i can think of that great in so many ways:

Great Danes

Greman Shephard

Black Lab

Beagal

Afgan Hound -Long HAIr

Pointer

sorry i cant find the site i told you but if you just yahoo it , ill bet youll find a great dog of your type.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

Since both of you like medium to large dogs and can't agree on settling for the same breed. Why don't you decide on a dog wherein both of you don't expect to have but have that "energy" for your choice of dogs.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

well labrador retrivers are good dogs, boxers, basically any kind of working dog..like dalamation, border collie..all of the working dogs are high energy, medium sized, and most have short hair..if i were you i would go on to www.akc.org and then look under the working group or the herding group..you should find something you like there...good luck..and if not there are a lot of good dogs in the humane society

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

get a mutt, find the right dog not the right breed for you at your local shelter!

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

Please consider adopting - there are many thousands of dogs waiting for better homes in shelters. If you want to search by specific breed, it's easy to do:

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

A tad bit smaller, but if you want a high energy dog, and with medium length fur, and around 20 inches at the shoulders is the Australian Shepperd. I have one, and he is THE BEST DOG I have ever met. I have known many...rottweilers, dalmations, labs, golden retrivers, border collies, pugs, mutts, pit bulls, and great pyrenesse.

Some aussies can be hyper, but if an aussie is hyper, then border collies (similar dogs) are manic!

They are VERY smart and loyal, and have a reserved, never agressive, attitude toward strangers. They are herding dogs, and have been bred to be able to, say, track down a wonded sheep, miles from his master, and be able to lead back to the flock as quickly and easily as possible. And aussies are more than capable! They do best with a "job", be it herding, agility, therapy dogs, or obedience.

Aussies are great, but they are not for everyone, and I would find the dog with the best temperment for you and your boyfrind, before considering looks. Best of luck!

And remember, smart, medium height and fur, with lots of beautiful colors (blue merle (blue with gray and black splotches) and black bi (black and white) black tri (black, white, and tan) as well as red merles, red bi's and red tri's.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

Sheltie, border collie, lab.

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

a rottweiler or for a big dog a mastiff both are excellent more than excellant

What type of dog is most compatable for us?

Go to the AKC website and it has all kinds of information about what each breed is like and what kind of exercise, housing, etc... they need. Very good reference. American Kennel Club. I used their website before I got my dog and I have been very happy with my decision.

Dog rubbing raw?

is there anything that i can put on an open sore that my dog has rubbed raw just under his eye, on the side of his nose, i think that the groomer may have cut his hair a little to short recently, although he has always been prone to rubbing this spot, he also is constantly chewing at is paw???

Dog rubbing raw?

Use tea tree oil on the sores-it's what my dog's groomer recommended when she butchered my dog! But it did help...

Which small dog do you recommend??

I am looking for a dog that is easy on the allergies, does not shead, has hair rather than fur, is calm and not typically hyper, does not typically have "accidents" when new people come over because of nervousness, does not typically bark much, loves companionship, but does not retaliate if left alone a few hours

Which small dog do you recommend??

You are better off with a stuffed animal. Everything you want in a dog does not exist.

ALL dogs shed

ALL dogs have accidents

ALL dogs bark with the exception of a Basenji

Small dogs are notorious of being quite difficult to housebreak.

Which small dog do you recommend??

I sort of agree with Pm Mom, some of the qualities you seek are just not going to happen. Any breed can have accidents, and any breed can delelop seperation anxiety if left alone. But personally I love Boston Terriers and have had great experience with them- they dont shed at all %26amp; their coat is like hair. They are very loving and have great personalities. The ones I have had have not been big barkers. They do tend to be hyper though, but as they get older this sometimes decreases... They absolutely have their calm times where they love to cuddle. They can be stubborn and a bit difficult to housebreak though.

Which small dog do you recommend??

a really good dog for you would be a goldendoodle. he doesnt shed much (my friends mom has lots of allergies but shes ok w/ him), hes very calm/quiet, can be a cuddle bug but is ok alone, and i dont know if ive ever heard him bark. the only thing is that hes quite big.

Which small dog do you recommend??

ALL dogs do these things at one point or another....But Im sure you can find the perfect dog for you without some of those traits I suggest that you go onto petfinder.com and search your area for small dogs. Under the picture they list a description of the dogs personality.

So hopefully you can find your 'almost' perfect match!

I wish you the best of luck!!

Which small dog do you recommend??

you have some outrageous criteria, but generally king charles cavalier spaniels are considered calm, friendly, loyal, and easy to care for. but pugs are cutest. :)

Which small dog do you recommend??

Haha, honey -- I suggest going to Toys 'R' Us, and buying a stuffed animal!

All dogs will shed, have accidents, will bark at some point ..

You need to think over what the definition of a 'dog' is. Is a companion, that you train and care for yourself. You need to think of these responsibilities and not think that they pop out so perfect!

Which small dog do you recommend??

Ohh ohh! Stuffed dog!! They cost like five bucks and don't do ANYTHING!

But maaaayyyybeee you could type in 'dog' on google and do alot of research then type in 'Havanese'(they don't shed, are small, cute, snuggle bugs, smart...).

Which small dog do you recommend??

I think you need to much in a dog. All dogs shed, even short haired ones, dogs need exercise to be calm and needs socializing to not feel nervous when people come over. All dogs bark in order to communicate and need to be taught how to stop barking on command. They need to be taught how to handle being left alone so they don't feel like they need to destroy things when you're gone.

Dogs take a lot of time and training in order to live happily and comfortably in your home. Maybe you should rethink getting a dog. I'm not trying to be mean, but what would happen if you got a dog and then decided it was too much trouble for you?

Which small dog do you recommend??

a teacup chawawa i used to have one

Which small dog do you recommend??

Well your criteria is difficult as all dogs will shed to lesser or greater degrees. Your opinion of small may be a problem too. If by small you mean maltese terrior kind of small you'll find that they tend to bark alot and be some of the most aggressive little rats you can get. Oh and fur is just the name for hair on animals so the hair vs fur argument is a little silly.

Though If by small you mean say cocker spaniel sort of szie. Well...... I'd say maybe a staffordshire. They have really short coats so shedding is minimal. Alot of other characteristics such as temperment in regards to being hyper can be trained in or out simply by how you raise your dog.

Every dog no matter what the breed loves companionship too, again though that's an aspect of how you raise the dog. Dog's are pack animals by nature so they always love being able to be with people.

Which small dog do you recommend??

Like others have said, all dogs shed. Some just shed less than others.

A schnauzer is a low shedding breed, but they are high maintenance on grooming, and are extremely intelligent, and therefore easily bored and prone to anxiety and destroying things when left alone. They also are efficient watchdogs and tend to bark quite a bit.

Bichons also are a low shedding breed, but again are very smart and prone to separation anxiety. They are very much "people dogs" and feel the need to be with their people always. They also can be quite energetic.

Poodles again are low shedding dogs, but are very high maintenance. They are talkative (both toy and miniature sizes) , and hyper and can be prone to submissive urination.

I think you may be better off with a short haired cat for your needs.

Which small dog do you recommend??

I agree with the above post, small dogs have a bad reputation when it comes to housebreaking. A lot of them have stubborn personalities and want to do what they want when they want to do it. My bichon fits most of your qualities you are looking for, though. She has hair, is calm (you can get maybe 2 to 3 hours of play out of her a week, other than that she likes to lay and cuddle). They are considered a hypoallergenic breed. She doesn't have accidents from nervousness, but she can be mistrusting when it comes to strangers and at times is on the yappy side (this is rare for her but common in a lot of small breeds). They are definitely people dogs, my dog would have you carry her around everywhere if you allowed it. She does fine left in the cage for around 7 to 8 hours on weekdays while everyone is at work or home. My suggestion would be to go around and look at the adult dogs available in shelters unless you have extreme patience and time to train the puppy. Remember not to rely strictly on common characteristics in the breeds because you can get one that does not match the breeds behavior at all.

Which small dog do you recommend??

You shouldn't get a dog.

Which small dog do you recommend??

I have Maltese and Maltese/Lhasa Apso. They are very wonderful dogs and have all the qualities you are look for. They do need to be trimmed and groomed regulary but I don't mind. They all love the one on one.

Which small dog do you recommend??

Considering that you need a very low-maintenance dog I would recommend to steer clear of Yorkies. My wife and I own a precious little one, but she has been very very difficult to house train, and she does shed a little.

If I were to recommend any dog to meet your criteria I would recommend a toy poodle. My parents own a female poodle and she doesn't shed enough to mention, is the definition of "lap dog", and learns exceptionally fast.

Which small dog do you recommend??

Bichon or a Havanese. They're the best! They are both in the same family, but the Havanese tend to be a bit more expensive. Havanese can be multi-colored, Bichon Frise are only white.

We have 3. My husband has terrible dog allergies, but is fine with these. They do not shed, but require lots of brushing to prevent mats.

My husband likes them because they are sturdy enough to almost classify as a 'real' dog :) But not too large -- we can pick them up and carry them no problem.

They are known for being "merry." Very even-tempered. Barking seems to be more of an issue for the Maltese. Actually "yapping."

You'll need to work on preventing separation anxiety, but this can be done without too much effort. Our 3 can be without each other, alone for hours, at the kennel without us. Perfectly fine.

(We keep ours mostly in a puppy cut -- not the voluminous puffs you see in some photos.)

Which small dog do you recommend??

All dogs can have accidents especial seniors and puppies. No such breed of dogs that doesnt have accidents. No such dogs that doesn't bark, plenty of dogs that love companionship, many of those dogs don't do well when left alone for few hours, no dog bred is completely shedless

All dogs no matter what breed are generally hyper. No dogs I know that has hair, not fur. unless you are thinking of the Chinese Crested or Hairless Terrier, they have a fine almost invisable down, the Chinese Crested has a fluffy fur bit on the head, and legs

PLEASE IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING A DOG PLEASE CONSIDER ADOPTING FROM A SHELTER, DON'T BUYPASS THE ADULTS, ADULTS ARE NOT SOMEONE ELSES PROMBLEM.

NEVER BUY FROM A PETSTORE OR BACKYARD BREEDER

Golden Retrievers are HEAVY SHEDDERS, THERE NOT GOOD WITH PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES.

GOLDEN RETRIEVER CAN SUFFER FROM ALLERGIES TOO.

Go to next day pets,

That is a dumb question you don't need a dog with what you are asking for doesn't exist !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GET Astuffed animal I MEAN TOY!!!!!!!!!!GET REAL,,,,,,,,,,, Don't know much about a living critter I SUPPOSE YOU WANT IT TO FEND FOR ITS SELF TOO..............

Don't bother with one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Which small dog do you recommend??

Maltese shed very little because they have no under coat, but they do need a lot of grooming (bathing, brushing, etc). The rest is just how well it's housebroken and depends on the personality of the dog.

Best type of dog??

I'm gonna get a dog, but I'm not sure which one would be best suited for me. Here are the following characteristics that the dog should have:

*Is no bigger that a basenji

*Doesn't bark alot

*Is easy to train

*Short hair (not too much shedding)

*Is good around older children

Best type of dog??

Mini or Standard Schnauzer. They don't shed but they have to be groomed periodically. I have a mini she only barks when necessary not incessantly. They are easy to train rank 12 in intelligence. Here's a list. The smarter the breed the easier it will be to train. http://www.whistlestopper.com/forum/arch...

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

Huuh. How do i say this.. i think i seriously messed my dog up. Okay. Heres how it goes:

-mandy had a guinea pig.

-guinea pig got scabies and all it's hair fell out.

-guinea pig died.

-date when that happened was near christmas.

-mandy got early christmas present b/c her parents felt sorry for her.

-present was puppy.

-mandy was 2 years younger than now and VERY hyper and played roughly like a litter-mate with dog.

- 2 years later, dog is too rough for small children, and older, more mature mandy is in a crisis with dog's crazy behavior.

-dog gets angry too easily, rarely listens to mandy, and is more hyper than a ditzy cheerleader that just drank a can of monster.

-finally...

-mandy NEEDs advice on wacko dog.

p.s. mandy says giving the dog up is NOT an option.

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

This method of re-training may just be the answer for Mandy and her dog. It is THE most fun method, for master and dog, and no dog is too old to learn these lessons. read this site, and see if you can make the time and commitment to re-train the dog.%26gt; http://www.clickerlessons.com/

I know it is the answer you need, but all depends on your own dedication to teaching this way.

You can get the clicker at any pet supply shop for only about $4, and online for even less (ebay, they are $2.50 after shipping)

Mandy, check out these awesome videos%26gt; http://video.google.com/videosearch?clie...

All of those dogs are trained by this method!

Its not too late for you to have that kind of relationship to your own dog. Two of those trainers are 12 years old!

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

I know alot about a dogs but this looks like she needs an animal behaviorist....Go to dogpile.com or another search engine and look for animal behaviorist in your area.

Good Luck!

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

This dog needs training. Get him and Mandy enrolled in an obedience class and stick to it! An untrained, beligerant dog is miserable to live with, unhappy, and dangerous. A well-trained dog is a joy to own.

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

try rewarding it for doing good things then treat it like it waz a puppy again

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

Both dogs probably could benefit with some new house rules and consistent training.

You can help and keep this new dog, but you will need to adapt some major new changes.

Are they spayed and neutered? If not, get them done and this will help.

As far as to rough with children, etc...this is a socializion issue. It can be worked with, as with most everything, but anything you do will take time, consistency and patience.

What breed is the newer dog? How much exercise do the dogs get?

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

Mandy needs to do some serious obedience worth with the dog, starting over with everything, and socialization is at the top of the list, especially with kids. Many also needs to assume a leadership role, one who is respected and deserves to be listened to. Mandy has a whole lot of work ahead of her! :)

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

http://www.canismajor.com/dog/alltopic.h...

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

Dear Mandy.

It is good that you don't consider giving the dog up. I am not a dog expert, but from the little experience I've got, i'll tell you this:

1. the problem CAN be solved, it isn't too late.

2. you need a professional trainer's advice, a dog behhaviourist or something

3. Be careful what professional you choose. He must be against all forms of violence (shock collars, choking collars, etc.) These will make things worse.

4. You need to establish your role with the dog as alpha, and not play mate. Also, when he has a behaviour you don't like, don't shout or show you are angry, they have fun pissing you off. Just show this behaviour is not rewarding, stop playing with him, ignore him, so that he understands that rough playing is stopping the fun of playing with you.

5. Last but not least, get him neutered if he is not already neutered.

Good luck.

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

Oh, Mandy it's never too late. Find a local obedience training school that does not use clickers or treats, they would be too much of a distraction for your wacko dog. Sign up for basic obedience training and do it. Practice the exercises that you learn for a minimum of three session a day, 15 minutes per session and be faithful to the practice. Apply what you learn to doggy's everyday living.

Remember, after you have passed the training, don't just stop cold. Practice periodically to make certain that your baby doesn't regress.

Never give up your pet because you made a mistake, just correct the mistake.

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

obedience training and exercise

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

Mandy then needs to realize she has to reestablish her dominance..I wouldnt suggest getting rid of the dog unless it became people aggressive.. the dog's behavior is centered the th pup lacked the obediance needed...several factors to be examined....

Hyper can be cured by correction..My favorite thing to suggest is a water bottle... 1/4 vinegar 3/4 water when the dog starts with Hyper behavior a simpl spritz and a "no" you may also want to consider the option of crating...dont use crating as a correction use it as alternative... dog wants to be hyper dog can go into crate like a time out with a child....it also teaches the dog he has his own "Room" to go to.. it gives him an "Out" Animal behavior can be complicated dogs rely on pack system of organization what it sounds like is your pup has forgotten and thinks he is the Alpha again, My suggestion is to begin training him again basic obediance.. even if he knows it..it will reestablish your place "Above him" sit stay heel ect...15-30 min a day, take him for walks you should begin to note a change in behavior

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

You never said what breed or size her dog is. Some dogs (like springer spaniels) are hyper till they're around 3 yrs old. But I agree with everyone else, this dog needs to have some obedience training. I wouldn't suggest Mandy does it. Mandy's already taught the dog that Mandy is a "littermate" not a pack leader. I'd have an adult teach the dog it's manners, then have the adult teach those same manners to Mandy, so Mandy knows what and how the dog was trained.

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

Mandy needs to exercise wacko dog. Tired dogs are not so wacko.

Mandy needs to take dog to obedience class. Positive obedience class. Mandy needs to be the alpha..try Nothing in Life is Free

http://www.sspca.org/Dogs/TANSTAAFL.html

Mandy need to be very careful when socializing dog with kids. Like taking the dog for lots of walks in a park with lots of kids (but don't let the kids be too close to dog) and reward dog for calm behavior. Take dog out in public after it has some obedience and reward for calmness. Make sure kids are gentle, calm, and non-hyper.

Dog experts? This question is for you.?

You just need to retrain your dog! Get a squirt bottle with water... and a penny can. DO NOT LET THE DOG SEE YOU THROW THE PENNY CAN... when he is being naughty, or aggressive... squirt him in the back of the head with the water bottle.... and if he is being aggressive, throw down the penny can.. Both WILL get your dogs attention!

NOW.. .when he is doing something good.. make sure you reward him! In a high pitched, happy voice, say Yes!! Good boy,

It works! I have retrained a dog doing that! Just take your time! It may take a little longer, but it will happen!

Good luck!

Dog Groomer?

Hi can anyone recommend a good dog groomer in South East London? and how much can I expect to pay? I just want the hair around my puppy's eyes trimmed.

Dog Groomer?

I know a few groomers, but I can't see one of them just doing the eyes, it would have to be a bath and a tidy up at least. My Sheepies hair grows all over their eyes and the way I taught them to be still is with 2 people. Get a few favourite tit bits and make the dog sit and stay, one person holds the dogs attention with the tit bit above his head and you lightly run the closed handle end of the scissors around the eye area while holding his jaw lightly in your other hand. Do this every day and he will soon learn to be still and you can start to trim, I have been doing this for 30 odd years and its never failed yet.

Dog Groomer?

when you find one tell me

Dog Groomer?

Well where I live in Michigan, a puppy cut is $15-20 (just a trim and a bath), and a full groom is $30 (which includes: bath, cut, nails, and dried).

Dog Groomer?

If you only want to get your dogs hair around the eyes trimmed then dont bother paying, trust me just do it yourself, you save money and time.

Dog Groomer?

look in your yellow pages

Dog Groomer?

http://www.city-visitor.com/southeastlon...

phone around a few %26amp; ask them what they charge

Dog Groomer?

Try http://www.accessplace.com/dog-grooming/...

Dog Groomer?

Well, go to www.pugsandkisses.com and you will find a grooming salon. It depends what breed you have though, if you only want your babies eyes trimmed then it should not be too costly. Also, why not go to your nearest pets at home, there is one in Dartford where the prices are very good.

Hope you find a groomer. oh my puppy cavalier king charles is waking up! she says hi! lol

Dog Groomer?

Best advice i can give you and it will save you money is to put your puppy in the bath! My dogs dont like a bath and are as still as statues and thats the time i do their ears, eyes and cut their nails! Try it and see.

Dog biopsy help?

My dog Gigolo just got surgery last week and we got the tests to the biopsy. I have no idea what the hell it says though, even the doctor couldn't explain it.

Microscopic Description: These are sectors of haired skin derived from a single submitted specimen. Portions of the dermis are effaced by dense accumulations of inflammatory cells consisting of a mixture of macrophages and neutrophils, which often surround fragments of hair shafts.

Microscopic Findings: SKIN: PYOGRANULOMATOUS DERMATITIS WITH ENDOGENOUS FOREIGN MATERIAL (HAIR SHAFTS)

Comment: The lesion is the result of previous furunculosis and a chronic foreign body reaction to hair shafts released from ruptured hair follicles. A bacterial or dermatophyte infection may be the underlying cause.

*I'm pretty sure I spelled everything write, I doubled checked. Can someone please tell me what the hell is wrong with my dog. The doctors are stupid.

Dog biopsy help?

Bob is right. I am assuming that your dog is losing hair and is scratching alot, causing open sores (lesions) . If they did a biopsy, I am puzzled as to why they didnt culture it??? I see nothing here to indicate that they did this. Hmm. They cant really pinpoint whether or not it is a bacterial or dermatophyte infection until they culture it. I am thinking that maybe you need to go see a different vet. Did he even prescribe an antibiotic?? Yeah, go see somebody else, take that report with you, it will give them something to go on. Meanwhile, your dog suffers. Sorry about that. I am still scratching my own head wondering why this report seems incomplete and why your vet didnt know what it meant. Is there maybe a little more there that you missed? Well, good luck.

Dog biopsy help?

Your dog has a skin infection possibly caused by ringworm or other fungas

Dog biopsy help?

basically an infected hair follicle. your vet should have explained it to you.

Dog biopsy help?

If ur doctor doesn't know what it means, then it is time to get a new doctor. Schedule an appointment with another doctor and take that info with u. Hopefully they can decipher it and start treatment if needed.

Dog biopsy help?

Chronic infected hair follicle. May have been caused by ingrown hair, bacteria or fungus.......

Dog biopsy help?

I would tell the vet to callwhere the biopsy was sent and to have them send you a letter in simple human terms what is wrong with your dog. After all this is what you paid for.

Which dog should I get: Indian Greyhound, Min-Pinscher, or Manchester Terrier?

I'm looking to get a dog in a few months and am debating heavily between the three breeds. These three breeds seems the most appropriate for my present situation and desires in a dog:

I live in an apartment (soon to be condo or small home) with limited yard access ( fenced in playing fields within a couple of blocks though).

I am active and would like my dog to be as well.

I'm looking for a loyal, intelligent dog (that is trainable).

No allergies and willing to clean but would prefer short or smooth hair.

Looking at smaller breeds due entirely to living situation -- don't want a small dog that seems small.

Costs I may be looking at (going rate, for example) and other overlooked info would be much appreciate.

Which dog should I get: Indian Greyhound, Min-Pinscher, or Manchester Terrier?

Mini pins are one of the happiest dog breeds out there. If you're worried about noise, I wouldn't go with them. Despite that, they're similar in costs and activity. Up here in central Canada they go for about $1000 each. Mini pins and Manchesters both do well in obedience, agility and overall are very quick, quirky dogs.

I've not heard of the Indian greyhound. I know of the Italian greyhound and could give you a lot of info about them as that's one of the sighthound breeds I intend on adopting in the future :-) . They're also very intelligent and are active little dogs that are rather quiet compared to other breeds. Their down side is that they can be **VERY** hard to potty train, so expect some chaos if you consider these guys.

Another breed you may be interested in are Whippets. I grew up with them and are very quiet. They're active but not overly so. They're medium sized dogs. Smaller than a greyhound but larger than the Pin and Manchester you're interested in. Their down side is that they're very people oriented dogs that hate being left alone. They can develop separation anxiety if you're not careful.

In the end, I hope you find a dog that you adore. Good luck with your research!

Which dog should I get: Indian Greyhound, Min-Pinscher, or Manchester Terrier?

**laughs** I wasn't sure if it was a spelling error or if you'd discovered a breed I'd never heard of! There's so many small and rare greyhound breeds coming into North America these days! Report It

Which dog should I get: Indian Greyhound, Min-Pinscher, or Manchester Terrier?

well, dont get your hopes up for a certain breed. get the dog you fall in love with Report It

Which dog should I get: Indian Greyhound, Min-Pinscher, or Manchester Terrier?

By the sounds of your housing situation would go for the Min Pinscher as they need the least amount of back yard to run around in. Very cute doggies too!!

Which dog should I get: Indian Greyhound, Min-Pinscher, or Manchester Terrier?

I personally, would go for a miniature pincer ~ Reason? Firstly.,,, I have Doberman pincers ~ they do need a lot of space,.. however, a miniature does not ~ and they have a loyal, intelligent nature ~ Unconditional love,....good luck! :)

Which dog should I get: Indian Greyhound, Min-Pinscher, or Manchester Terrier?

John, I am the happy owner of a pomeranian! Selecting a dog that is right for you is very important! Given the 3 choices, I personally would go with the I. G., only because I know most "terrier" breeds do tend to have a noticable body odor, and the M.P., does @ times tend to be more "emotional"? or a little needy...perhaps, LOL! I love them all! But that is my fina thought. Best of luck! Also....DO get pet ins. it is cheap! but worth it!

Which dog should I get: Indian Greyhound, Min-Pinscher, or Manchester Terrier?

minpin, their cuter.

Shaving a dog for the summer???

i know that double coated dogs don't need it but i have a hienz 57 dog is there anyway i can find out if its a double coated breed???? if not i may get its hair cut for the summer

Shaving a dog for the summer???

Without pics, I can' tell. You can take him to a groomer. It won't cost you anything just to show them your dog and ask them the question.

Double coated dogs have a dense, thick downy fur underneath their longer hair that is on top.

Shaving a dog for the summer???

It is usualy really bad for their skin and causes more problems than it solves

Shaving a dog for the summer???

Do you have a photo of your dog? A double-coated dog will have a harsher, longer outercoat and if you spread the hairs, you will see a lighter, fluffy, downy undercoat, which is usually a lighter color. If you're still in doubt, make an appointment with a groomer to discuss your dog and available options.

If you decide you want him shaved for the summer, stress to the groomer not to take his coat down too closely. A good groomer can leave a nice haircoat an inch long or so that will still provide the dog some protection from the sun, other weather, and biting insects while offering the advantages of keeping him cool. There is no reason to completely shave the dog unless his coat is in poor condition and badly matted, in which case a complete shave is a necessity.

Another option would be to have them shave an 'air conditioning strip.' This is a trim from the bottom of the breastbone or armpits continuing along the abdomen to the groin and down the insides of the thighs. A clip like this will help to keep the dog cool by shortening the hair over the major blood vessels while still maintaining the look of an unclipped dog since you won't see the trimmed spot easily, especially if the dog has a longer coat. Many people do this clip on hunting dogs and older double-coated dogs that may have a heavy spay/neuter coat and a tendency to mat, or on dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors where mud and weeds would mat on a wet undercoat. The dog still retains the look and protection of the body coat, while still gaining some of the benefits of a summer trim.

Shaving a dog for the summer???

Unless you plan on applying sunscreen religiously, I do not recommend shaving your dog. Your dogs coat protects them from the sun's harmful rays and prevents sunburn.

If your dog suffers from the heat it is better to keep him/her inside during the hottest part of the day allowing him/her to enjoy play time outside in the morning and in the evening when the sun is not as strong (not as warm, as well). If you need to let your dog out in the middle of the day (warmest) please provide your baby with PLENTY of water (bowls, sprinkler, kiddie pool, ice cubes) and shade outside only if you are home to carefully look for signs of heat exhaustion/shock which could lead to death.

Shaving a dog for the summer???

Take it to a groomer and have them make a suggestion of what's best grooming-wise - stripping down the coat or clipping. I had a border collie/ retriever mix that was black and we did clip her successfully - but not too short - they need some coat to protect them from the sun. She was much cooler and happier. She looked a little bit like a poodle with a puppy cut (not a show cut).

Shaving a dog for the summer???

A double coated breed has 2 diffferent types of hair in their coat , guard hairs which is on top tends to be shinier and stiffer and the undercoat is kind of wooly and soft usually thickest on the hips/flanks and often will clump or matt there if you don't brush out

Shaving a dog for the summer???

I dont think its a good idea to shave your dog. You will be applying sunscreen all the time... Put a kiddie pool in your backyard. Put ice in his water. Theres a few ideas for you.

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

my dog's face will get huge swollen blobs on his face and the hair around his eyes is falling off and his skin is getting all crusty and a bunch of goop is coming out of his eyes. he isn't out-side much just to go potty and he sleeps often because allot of the time he is lazy.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

He needs to go to the vet, ASAP. DOn't wait, this sounds like a serious infection. Goop coming from the eyes is nothing to mess around with. Go tomorrow, get him some veterinary help

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

Yeah, sounds like an infection or an allergy to something. Take him to the vet. Get some antibiotics or whatever your vet prescribes.

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

Get your dog to the vet ASAP....infection

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

It sounds like an infection, either skin or eye. It is fairly serious, especially if it's in his eyes. Eye infections, if untreated, can lead to blindness. The skin condition/lumps may be associated with the eye, or may be independent. But I agree, take him to a vet.

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

if anything like that happens to your dog take him to the vet right away!!

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

Tabitha, why are you on here and not ON YOUR WAY TO THE VET LIKE A RESPONSIBLE OWNER?

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

Your dog could have been stung in the face by a bee or waspvery close to the eye! That happened to my moms chocolate Labrador before.....%26amp; if he was stung by a bee %26amp; it getting worse he may be allergic to bees or whatever stung him! Definetly take him to the vet as soon as u can!

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

It sounds like what happened to my dog. His eyes got all crusty and his eyelids very glued shut by it. We thought maybe it was some dirt and we peeled it off but the next day it was back. So then we took him to the vet . The stuff that they gave us was a goop that you apply to his eye. It got better almost immediately. Although it temporairily bleached the hair next to his eye so now it's white. So it's either he got some dirt in his eye and his eye is trying to clean it out or he has the infection that my dog had. I dont know about the swollen face thing but ( like someone said) he might have been stung by some sort or insect. If it doesn't get any better by the time this question expires i suggest that you take him to the vet before it gets too bad.

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

It sounds like allergies, and perhaps a yeast infection as well.He needs to see a vet right away.He probably needs to take antihistamines, antifungals, and maybe steroids to get him back in shape. He will also need eye ointment and medicated shampoo, and maybe a special diet. He can;'t be feeling good with all that happening to him,so I would call the vet first thing tomorrow if I were you.

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

Could be mange. Mange is a parasite that eats away the flesh, and the hair falls out. You need to get him to a veterinarian as soon as possible. It can be fatal if not treated in time.

HELP!!! something is wrong with my dog's face!!!?

Tabitha, honey,

dont you get it from all these replies?

go to the the VET!!!!

VET! VET! VET! VET!

NOW NOW NOW NOW!!!!

Dog with Allergy or Demodex?

Just this week my 11 mo. old Siberian Husky female started losing hair near the corner of her mouth. The hair loss is just on one side of her face. I took her to the vet and they originally diagnosed demodectic mites. This was confirmed with a skin scraping, however demodectic mites are present on ALL dogs in limited numbers. The only reason they would get out of control is if the dog has a weakened immune system. The skin scraping only produced two or three mites, one of which was dead. However, a day or two after our visit to the vet, she has been scratching at the bald area at night causing bleeding. Itching is usually not a symptom of demodex. Over the last couple weeks I have been noticing a large number of unripened tomatoes in my yard. The dog has been eating these tomatoes and grabbing them from a tomato plant bordering our fence. I ripped out the invasive plant yesterday. Could a tomato allergy cause the hair loss and itching? OR could it be the demodex or some other cause?

Dog with Allergy or Demodex?

you generally will not see demodex in a skin scrape unless the dog is having an outbreak of them. the fact that your dog has hair loss, is itchy, has a positive scrape all points to demodex being the cause not tomatoes.

and yes, dogs with demodex can and are usually itchy.

Cat lost hair but it is growing back?

my 3 1/2 yr old female cat has lot her hair. She is a black long haird fixed female. She is an inside cat with no possible way to get fleas.

about a month or so ago she lost a wide long strip of hair from the mid of her back to her tail. it looked like someone took a BIG razor ( about 3 inches wide) to her. I dismissed it and kept an eye on it because my other cat and her play rough and that is generally the area of attack. lol Well, anyways it is going back now but it is still very noticable. her hair is 3-4 inches long and the new hair is only about an inch.

She has shown no signs of disease, she eats adn drinks and play like normal. The spot was just bald no scratches or redness or anything. But now i can't help but wondered what caused it.

Around that time we got a new dog..not the first dog she lived with and not the first time for that breed of dog. Do you think it was the stress of a new dog? or is there possible something else wrong with my baby? and dont just say vet

Cat lost hair but it is growing back?

I had a similar problem with my cat. She lost hair in straight line from her neck down to her tail. I took her to the vet who advised me that my cat had been burned.

It turns out my ex husband was abusing her and had burned her with boiling water. I left him, by the way, and am happily divorced.

If there are others in your household, I implore you to make sure no one is abusing the cat.

edit: I hope I did not sound accusational, and I have no doubt you love your pets. I was equally boggled by my cats hair loss and felt compelled to tell you.

Your cat may have gotten a fungal infection that he's managed to fight off on his own. You mention that the fur is growing back and that's a good sign.

Cat lost hair but it is growing back?

it was probably the new dog. A new pet can stress a dog or a cat out and cause them to lose hair. If it happens again at a later date then i would take her to the vet. but as long as its growing back then she should be fine. The only other things that could cause that would be fleas or an allergic reaction to something in the home.

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

My dog has black bug kind of things on in her hair. She keeps scratching her body and biting around her tail and under. I gave her a good shower when i noticed those things on her. But it's hard to wash them off. And i don't know how she got those. And when i pet her, she is always scratching everywhere i touch. While I was giving her a shower i noticed that the fleas were disappearing when i wash it with water. Even if i use shampoo the fleas still managed to stay on her. But some did fall. So I didn't know what to do to make them go away.

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

I would suggest taking him into your local grooming salon. I'm a groomer, and we get TONS of flea bath dogs. We bathe them in a special shampoo that kills ALL the fleas. If we have to, we'll bathe them 3 or 4 times. Also, you MUST make sure that while your dog is at the grooming salon, you flea bomb your house and car! Those suckers will be everywhere. If you pick your dog up, and you didn't flea bomb your house and car, your dog will just get it again and you basically wasted a ton of money getting him groomed. Another option is a monthy flea preventative such as frontline. However, DO NOT USE FRONTLINE AND GIVE YOUR DOG A FLEA BATH at the same time. They are both heavily medicated, and can harm your dog.

P.S. This "Bozema" chick a few answers obviously doesn't do her research. A Bath is the BEST way to kill the flea's FAST. Frontline treatments are good, but are more of a preventative.

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

go to petsmart or a pet place also the vet and buy k 9 advantix or you can buy a flea collar but the flea collar makes your dog smell like rotten milk

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

I would suggest keep washing her with special 'flea killing' shampoo. Keep washing once every two days. When you see a flea, pull it out with tweezers and flush it down the toilet. I hope that this helps!

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

You can take her to a groomer and have it done or you can go to a pet store or even a super market get some flea shampoo follow the directions and bathe her yourself. Then get her a flea collar. Depending on how bad it is you might want to fog your house. Also be sure and wash her bedding etc in HOT water and then do it all again in about 10 days as the eggs have an incubation period.

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

Get Frontline Plus or Advantage and use it every 30 days religiously. These products are the best and most effective at getting rid of fleas. Baths won't do it and cheaper solutions such as fleas collars, sprays, dips and shampoos don't work well or as long and are more toxic.

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

I have my black lab on Forntline for ticks and fleas, it is purchased through my vet, it works great.

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

Give her another bath, but this time with shampoo against fleas. While your doing this pass a comp trough her fur the fleas should fall out. If this doesn't work take her to a vet to get flea shots or something to rub in the fur. or ask for advice on how to wash them out of the fur.

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

Go to your local vet and check him out. If it has fleas request a flea bath or a flea collar.

What should I do when my dog got fleas?

if you sure its fleas, see above or below (LOL) but in any event see a vet first, it sounds like you got a different infestation. There are a lot of different PREVENTIVES on the market ( i use frontline 4 ) well my dog is, but it is very important to use it regularly, like on a specific day once a month and in the right amount for the weight of your dog.But those are PREVENTIVES!!!! again take your dog to a vet, those people are specialized in dog HEALTH care. a groomer is o.k. for simple fleas but would you go to the beauty saloon with chest pain??? i know this comparison limps, but so does any, however a DMV dedicated a substantial period of his live do become e medical professional a groomer a couple of hours training as so the red bottle is for this and the blue one for this and here is the garden hose, but dont forget to flip this lever or there is no water.... well its your dog and your choice, one more thing, do not forget monthly deworming, it can de deadly to dogs and poss. humans but again what and how much is in the hands of a VET. If you want to own a dog , well he depends on you and your choices for his wellbeeing, similar to a child...

don't have the time or money, get a stuffed animal

Has anyone ever had a pet dog that was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid?

I took my dog to the vet today for boosters and they noticed she had a little patch of hair missing ftom her tail. She asked if Lucy chewed on that area and I have never seen her do that. So she asked if she could test her thyroid...with a blood test and it came back at the lowest end of the normal range. She said we would have to retest in 6 months and if it dips below that magic mark on the scale, she would have to go on meds, twice daily for a month. If you have experience with this, please tell me what you know. We love her dearly, but at the same time, she is a dog. What would an underactive thyroid mean for her? Just curious...please don't judge me about saying she is only a dog. She is overly loved in our home...I just don't want to throw money at the vet if I don't have to.

Has anyone ever had a pet dog that was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid?

Hypothyroidism is a fairly common condition in dogs. The good news is that it's also fairly easy and pretty cheap to treat. Usually dogs go on thyroid medication (my vet uses thyrosin) often just one pill twice daily. Dogs that are treated (especially if they are caught early before symptoms are advanced) live very normal lives, usually they just urinate a little more because of the thyrosin. Dogs that are not treated are more prone to infections, obeisity, and dramatic (and sometimes dangerous) changes in temperament.

Has anyone ever had a pet dog that was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid?

It's called hypothryroidism. It's not uncommon.

Meds are relatively cheap.

She'll do fine for a long and healthy life on meds.

Good luck.

Has anyone ever had a pet dog that was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid?

Yes, it is VERY common and the meds are about as cheap as they come.

Has anyone ever had a pet dog that was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid?

I had a Miniature Poodle who had hypothyroidism. She was treated with a small dose of thyroid meds and lived to be 19 yrs old. Her symptoms were sluggishness, a total loss of hair on her tail and flanks and a thickening of her skin. She lived a happy life and her condition didn't seem to bother her a bit.

Maryclip

Has anyone ever had a pet dog that was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid?

hypothyroidism is very common! however, to be thorough, your vet needs to run a tsh and a free t4 blood tests (no the t4 is not free, the test is called free t4) to make absolutely sure and there is no reason to wait 6 months to retest and start on meds. uncontrolled hypothyroidism can make things worse for your dog. also, your dog will more than likely need to be on medication for life, not just a month.
