they are the same breed but the shavenese are havenese's with the short hair gene and are nicknamed shavenese. i want an affectionate, cuddly, calm, easy to train dog that doesn't shed hardly or at all
Which is better dog breed-- havanese or shavanese?
i pet sit two Havanese often. they are very lovable but not what i would call calm and they are barkers. they are very smart but also a bit stubborn so you need to be very consistent in training and they are hard to housebreak. one of my charges is 10 mon. and still not totally housebroke and i know it's not for lack of trying on the owners part.
they may not shed much but their coats matt easy and they need regular brushing. if you live where there is snow it will ball up very thick on the legs ,chest and underside. hope this helps.

I was so interested in your description of the 'shavenese' that I went and looked it up. It does not exist and is a disqualifying fault and I don't see that anyone reputable calls them that.
Learn about the breed first at:

and then decide if it is the breed for you.

the breed is suppossed to have a long coat. I would look for a havanese.
Anyone who is breeding for the short coat is either breeding mutts, or is breeding poor quality specimens. You will only find the short coat from a back yard breeder or puppy miller.

The breed standard is that they have a gorgeous long coat. Anyone breeding against that shouldn't be trusted. NO responsible breeder would breed against type.
So, I guess my answer would be to go with the Havanese, since it's the only breed that actually exists.
As far as affectionate and cuddly - this will depend on the quality of the breeding and the specific dog. As far as "calm", I have yet to meet a "calm" toy breed dog.
While the standard does say that this breed is trainable, I'm betting that it's not as easy as it would be with a Lab, GSD, Border Collie, or similar truely trainiable breeds. But, I could be wrong. Talk to a few good breeders and see if their trainability matches what you think of as "easy to train".

They are the same breed. However, a shavanese is a genetic mistake. They appear in litters that have parents that each have a resessive short hair gene. They are the exact same dog personality, smarts etc., but one has long hair and one has short hair. One big difference is that Havanese are Hypo-allergenic and non-shedding, but shavanese aren't. I would not get a shavanese. They may have other genetic problems. Instead, just get a Havanese and keep it in a puppy cut.

I agree with 'mcc'. I looked at the link that 'mcc' suggested and if you look under 'Disqualifications' you would find that a short coat is not allowed on the Havanese at any time.
Disqualifications
璺?%26gt; Height at withers under 8 闄?or over 11 闄?inches except that the minimum height range shall not apply to dogs or bitches under twelve months of age.
璺?%26gt; Complete absence of black (or chocolate in the chocolate dog) pigmentation on the eyerims, nose or lips
璺?%26gt; Coarse, wiry coat.
璺?%26gt; An atypical short coat on an adult. (Atypical refers to a smooth, flat coat with, or without furnishings.)
