Should I take my dog to the vet?

Our dog is a 9 month old collie/ lab mix and she has started loosing hair. It started very slowly- almost a month ago. She lost the hair around her eyes and snout. We thought it was probably just because it has been so hot where we live.

This week we noticed that she is loosing hair on her front legs also. There are some very small bumps underneath the places where she is loosing the hair. Everywhere else she has a beautiful sleek coat and there are not patches missing anywhere.

Is this normal for dogs? or should we take her to the vet to make sure it is nothing serious?

She is very active- she will walk/run for about 2 miles a day with me and still has lots of energy when we get back, she is also eating well and drinking her water. She shows no signs of being sick- just the hair loss and bumps.

Thanks for any suggestions

I think the vet would be a good idea it sounds like she has some kind of skin condition and it is not normal for dogs to loose hair like that.

Are the spots round or odd shaped? If I were a guessing person, I'd guess either ringworm or demodectic mange. Either way, a trip to the vet is appropriate. If it's ringworm, it's a fungus that is contagious to people through contact. If it's demodex, it's a tiny mite that is common on dogs, just on some dogs they multiply out of control. It takes a special dip to kill them, and I don't believe it's available OTC. Vet can do a skin scraping to check for demodex.

Is she itchy at all--does she scratch/lick/chew the areas? If so, she may have an allergy. At her age, it is most likely due to her food.

Other possibilities include mites. Demodex mites can certainly cause hair loss and often do not cause the dog to itch. Sarcoptes mites ("scabies") causes hair loss and are very itchy.

Regardless, it is not normal for a dog to lose hair or have bumps on her skin. Please take her in for a checkup. The vet and tech(s) should look her over closely and ask several questions. He/She should take several skin scrapings as well, and probably other diagnostic techniques.

Good luck and I hope you find the cause!

She could have skin mites, or another type of skin issue. You should take her to the vet. Good Luck!

Allergies maybe? I would definitely take her to the vet, it must be itchy and uncomfortable.

Collies and labs both are very prone to allergies. Take her to get a skin scraping. if she does not have mites (probably won't) disregard what your vet says to feed (hill's sensitive skin) and feed wellness fish and sweet potato or azmira beef if you can find one of the two. If not find any food with no corn, wheat or soy. these are the three most common allergies among dogs and cause exactly what you describe. If you can find a food with fish as a protein source that is great. You can also supplement with salmon or flax-seed oil to improve skin its 50 drops to 10lbs body weight.

the other thing is do not feed or water her in plastic ever. there is an antioxidant in plastic that causes them to loose the fur on the muzzle. My dog did this and non of the vets knew what it was. I found it online and switched to a metal bowl. He now has a beautiful coat and the vet thinks so too.

TAKE THE DOG TO THE VET! omg better safe then sorry!

It actually sounds like your dog might have allergies...

Have you noticed her rubbing her eyes with her forlegs?

Is the skin thats now exposed a little red, prehaps chaffed?

Even if you say "no", I would get them back to the vet...and inquire...it doesn't sound like mange and I'm actually surprised that the vet didn't look at this when you were there, but hey- what are you going to do?

Dogs can have allergies just like us, and they typically don't sneeze and wheeze like we do, ut instead it shows itself as a skin irritation...and they use their forarms and paws to scratch for relief, causing fur loss usually to both the area of the face that they're scratching as well as the limbs.

They have medication on the market for that, but I would definitely consult your vet before applying anything topical or something they can ingest.

Best of luck.

our dog was losing hair in spots i think was due to an alleregy or maybe some type of mange. so, i think you should get it checked out to be safe. once our dog got the dip treatment. she got better at once. goodluck..

Should I take my dog to the vet?

Yes, take her to the vet. Hair loss like that is NOT normal and needs to be checked out. In fact, the hair loss patterns you are describing are textbook classic presentation for demodectic mange. Demodex is part of the normal skin fauna and it is not uncommon for puppies and young dogs to come down with demodectic mange. It isn't contagious to other dogs, but it is a pain to treat, requiring several weeks of medicated dips and several recheck skin scrapings, and since yours keeps getting worse it's obviously not going to resolve on it's own. I've seen cases of demodex so bad that the poor dog's skin was cracked and bleeding...every time she wagged her tail she splattered blood all over the wall.

It sounds like hot spots to me. I have a basset beagle that was diagnosed with mange, hot spots, dermatitis and whatever else the vets could think up. We tried everything but nothing worked. Finally, my wife found some information about this exact problem and developed an all natural and organic oil supplement that cured my dog. Check it out: http://www.bestnaturalpet.com/index.php?...
