My family and I just adopted a new dog. He's a 2 year old Jack Russell/Fox Terrier mix. He was neutered only a few days ago so he's just relaxing in his kennel for now. First off, when we came home, he went right into his cage. About 10 minutes later our Daschund/Chihuahua mix, who is also 2, started barking crazily at him from outside the cage. While she was barking, her tail was wagging and her hair wasnt standing up so I dont believe she was trying to be a jerk to him. We told her no and she stopped. She really knows what the word "no" means. Now, all she does is sit and lie down next to him and stare at him. She even fell asleep by him. All while he's in the kennel. My sister and I beliveve that she's trying to keep a watch on him, not in a good way. Any ideas?

I have a Doxie and I got another dog later. She wasn't very tolerant of the new dog, at first. She eventually got used to him. Dachshunds were bred as hunting dogs. Yours may be trying to "alert" you to this strange animal in the house, yet at the same time she is curious. Just separate them for a while if they happen to scrap with one another. Eventually they will be fine, especially since they are opposite sexes.
EDIT: It will just take time. It will be fine, you'll see. My Doxie -- who, by the way, is not purebred as far as I know (in fact she looks like she could have a bit of Chihuahua in her) -- was the same way toward my new puppy -- a PIT BULL puppy, no less. I don't exactly know how to explain it. She sort of behaved as if the new dog was nothing but a pesky rat invading her space. Dachshunds may be shy toward new people, but they are otherwise assertive, courageous, tenacious little dogs. Of course my pit bull soon grew big and wise enough to dominate when he really wants to, but the Doxie still has his respect. He knows when he pushes her too far with his roughhousing and teasing. Your Dachshund mix won't take any guff, but she will eventually accept your terrier mix and appreciate his playfulness. And the terrier will go with the flow. Until they are used to each other, just separate them as necessary.

jeolous probably

Maybe she's actually excited about having a playmate. That she slept next to him is a good sign.

She's just trying to figure out what's going on and who this new dog is. When I first brought home our second adopted dog, the older one watched his every move....still does actually. I wouldn't be concerned. The barking incident reminds me of my boys. When one has a toy the other wants or when one is laying in the crate and the other wants him to come out....they just stand there and bark at each other. I have no idea what they are saying...but it's their way of communicating. I'm sure your little mix was just telling your other dog something.
*The poster above me has a good point as well. When dogs will be near each other, it indicates they have accepted each other. Although you may still have a few altercations as everyone adjusts to the new situation...everything should be fine.

she could like to get him as a new playmate, or she wants to play ,but he feels nervous and she is giving him signs of maybe its okay don't be worried they won't hurt you because he is new ......

dogs are pack animals and have to establish dominance between themselfs....
your dog is happy to see the other dog and wants to play. they will be a little agressive to eachother sometimes because they are pack animals. but your dog sounds nice.

This dog smells like the vets. He's new to the house, and he hasn't been out of his kennel yet. I would stare at him too.
I hope it works out for you.

It sounds to me like the dachy is just wanting to be friends. The JrT probably smells strange from the visit to the vets and also being a bit unwell after his operation.
I can't see anything there indicating hostility.
To maintain the social pack order, pat your Dachy first, feed it first, and always give it lots of positive attention and praise when it is behaving well around the JRT. Dogs will bark from excitement too, so it's not always aggression.
Provided both your dogs have had their full vaccinations, pop them both on the lead and take them for little walks together, this is great for getting you all to bond together.
Put away any toys or bones or other items that they might try to possess, introduce these things slowly when they show they are getting along well.
A girl and boy should get along just fine.
