My dog has a yeast infection in his ears that is absolutely driving him crazy. I don't think it hurts so much, just itches. The vet gave us Mometamax a gentimiacin solution a month or two ago. The only problem is my dog will NOT allow us to get the drops in his ear good enough for it to be effective. He has never let anyone touch his ears for more then a second, and goes nuts when we have to pull the hair out.
I know gentimiacin is a drug that comes in pill form for humans. Is there a pill form for dogs? And would if be effective since the problem is not symptomatic?

Gentamicin is an antibiotic...a yeast infection will not respond to antibiotics. He may also have a secondary bacterial infection along with the yeast infection. Call your vet and tell them you are unable to medicate the dog's ears topically. Maybe they can prescribe oral anti-fungal and/or antibiotics. You will probably want to schedule your dog to have his ears cleaned and treated under sedation to kick start his treatment.

First...You must teach him to accept treatment. A pill in his mouth will not cure the rot in his ear. Hold him down secureley, get a helper, then put some hydrogen peroxide in the ear canal and massage the base of the ear, then take a cotton ball pinched in a hemostat and absorb the excess. Let the ears air dry. Purchase some sulfur powder at the pet store and puff in the ear. He has Canker, if it continues past 3 days go back to the Vet and let him probe for a fox tail or other foreign object. Good luck!

WE make for distribution our own powder that is super effective for all ear problems, however all these need to be added into the ear.
Best way is to wait till he is asleep, then do it.
Give 1/2 benadryl tablet to help relieve the itch then this will also calm down the dog enough fro you to either add the solution or a powder.

when all healed may I suggest that you start to play with the dog in parts that he finds intolerable, that way when issues arise such as this , it will be normal practice for medication.
Play with feet-pads, toes, ears, teeth, mouth , around eyes, all you do is touch and talk they love it !

you can use baby powder to reduce itching

You can get the meds in the ears. You need two people and a large beach towel.
Take your dog and wrap him firmly up with the towel, make sure his legs are not able to get out of the towel. Hopefully the towel is big enough for your dog. This will minimize his ability to fight back. Now, that person should sit on the couch holding the dog so he is lying on his side, still firmly wrapped up. The person doing the medicine should hold the ear back to expose the canal. Place the amount of medication your vet said to in there. You will still have to deal with some squirming but try your best to remain patient. Dogs can sense emotions so well. Once the medication is in the ear, fold the flap down and gently massage the ear from the outside of the flap. Your dog should love this part. He thinks he's getting a nice massage but you are actually helping the medication go deeper in the ear.

Have you contacted the office to let them know that he isnt allowing you to treat his ears? It's possible that, if your schedule allows, they would be willing to medicate him each day if you are able to bring him in.
If it's been that long, he may need to be rechecked to make sure nothing else has started up in there.
