What dog breed should I get?

I am getting a puppy and I'm wondering what type to get. I want her to be small to medium sized and I want her to be a companion lap dog who is easy to train. She can have any type of hair- but I prefer long. It doesn't matter how big or small of yard or space. I don't know much, if anything, about dogs and breeds of dogs so I appreciate the help!!!

Never buy from a petstore, don't buy on favourite breed, looks or cuteness factor.make sure it suits your lifestyle

don't buy from a petstore

Do you have kids?

Adult dogs are better with kids

17390+total dogs were admitted to RSPCA shelter right around victoria australia

Reclaimed est total 7779+

Adopted total est 4727+

Euthanised total est 4520+

Please adopting from a shelter

My favourite breeds for a small lapdog are Cavalier King Charles Spaniel(Good with children)-they are longhair-requires lots of grooming, highly energetic, and friendly lapdogs, lots of walks.

Bichon Frise(good with children) need regular clipping

Cocker Spaniel can be snappy

Chihuahua can be snappy

I would not recommend Border Collies, Kelpie, Coolie, or cattle dogs or any crosses with these breeds as these dogs are ment to run on a farm-so not suitable for apartment or indoor living.there are some exception though that would suit a large yard.

There are plenty of mutts out there at shelters that need homes. Could be your perfect, unique dog.

Otherwise, go to the AKC website %26amp; do some thorough research on the personalities %26amp; behaviors of purebred dogs. Good luck!

You say in your question that you don't know anything about dogs.....why do you think you would be a good caregiver of one??

Please do some research FIRST before you think about getting a dog. They are a lot of work and require a lot of time and $$.

Once you do this.....I would suggest a Cocker Spaniel, Cavalier King Charles, Shih-Tzu. They are mellow lap-dogs and are very sweet.

Good luck

This had some great recommendations for me.

Well, you should start off by looking at a dog breed site, such as dogbreedinfo.com or nextdaypets.com and then research more about specifics breeds you may like on the sites. I am very fond of Dachshunds and they do fit your description pretty well. They are small-medium, great companions, very loyal, intelligent, cute, funny, and just plain adorable, come in three coat types-smooth, long, and wire, and two sizes-mini and standard, three if you want to get technical because there's a size Dachshund lovers call tweenies, which is around the 11-14 lb. range (however, it's not a recognized size by the AKC, but that doesn't matter in your case) I don't recommend them to children or first time dog owners though as they have a tendancy to be stubborn, are prone to back problems and seizures, and can be difficult to housebreak. Just do some research and look on petfinder.com when you've found a breed that CAN suit you and your lifestyle. Good luck!

Hope that helped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should look into rescuing an older small dog. I have 2 pugs i adopted, one from a shelter and another from a breeder. Neither were really potty trained but learned VERY quickly. they love attention, are overly friendly and are wonderful lap dogs. pug puppies can have a lot of engery. If you get one, you have to train with stern words as they become afraid/timid if you "spank" them. You will recieve more love from a pug than you would think possible. Ours are like small shadows. don't pay more than 500 though. they will have breathing problems and can't play/walk for more than 30 mins-1hr.

Try this breed quiz...hope it helps, but I find it to be too generalized.

Chihuahuas are great lap dogs but check into breed information on what ever breed you decide to get and do lots of reach on it before you decide this way you will know what you are getting into and will be able to give it the right kind of care

Go to the pound for your first dog. From there you can find out different qualities you covet or dislike in a dog. Plus you'll be saving a dog's life.

Some of the major pet food companies have a place where you can put in what traits you'd like to have in a dog and they'll come up with examples of what types of dogs fit those traits. Consider your life style-are you gone or home a lot, how active are you, can you afford the illnesses and routine care, obedience training and good food? Please take your time and do your research. There are too many animals in shelters because people did not understand what they were getting into and the length and time of the commitment. And realize too, that most dogs are not in shelters because of something THEY did, it was ignorance on the owner's part. Many of the dogs in shelters are purebreds and not "mutts" as is commonly thought. We have even had show dogs in our shelter! Please, please do your research!!!!! And spay/neuter. Good luck!
