Hendrix was once a stray, and although very loyal to me, is unruly when it comes to any type of dog maintenance. Getting him into the shower takes over an hour and a package of hot dogs, and that is just into the shower, because of his long hair (which at this point looks like dreadlocks) shampoo process takes well over an hour, maybe two, if I can control him for that long. He won't allow me to cut his hair, infact the very sight of scissor's/ trimmers send him into a frenzy. Looks like he is still a homeless dog!....has to be really uncomfortable w/ summer heat. Groomer's turn me down saying Chow's are notoriously mean. Won't get out of the car at the vet's office/ recognizes it. Is their such a thing as dog tranquilizers? Some way to sedate him? Can you buy something over the counter? Is it safe? I don't want to do anything that would harm him, he is well loved family member of about 6 years. I do not know his age, but some of his behavior would indicate past abuse.

Call your Vet and ask If they have a groomer on site...I'm a groomer at a vet and i take any animal to groom. ( EVEN A CHOW..DUNDUNDAAAA) If the animal is bad,, they get Knocked out and then groomed with a tech helping out.. I WOULD NOT GO TO A GROOMER THAT WILL SEDATE YOUR DOG WITHOUT A VET ON HAND%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;ONLY A VET SHOULD SEDATE%26gt;%26gt;NOT A GROOMER!!!!!!!!!

Call your vet and explain the situation to them...yes they have a med to calm down dogs, but they will know what to do...

there are definately meds. it may seem a little mean but it will definately HELP ur dog, leyt alone you. talk to a vet and explain what is going on. in my area there is a vet that comes to your house. check in your yellow pages for a vet and groomer that can come to ur house.

I am almost postive their are groomers out there that have something to make the dog fall asleep while they groom them.

As far as giving him a bath there should be some kind of shampoo out there that doesn't need to be rinsed out. I know they make it for cats, so I am sure they make it for dogs also.

Just call around to all your vets and groomers there is got to be someone out there that is willing to give it a try. Take someone with you that can help you get the dog in. Make sure it's someone the dog knows and likes.

*YOU* made him that way. YOUR fault. It takes a MAGIC WAND called "TRAINING" to cure! Wow,never heard of *that*,huh? You said you've had him for*6* f'ing YEARS?!?

Yes,he can be tranq'd. At the vet. Grow up %26amp; DO IT. It'll cost you but concider it your "fine" for 6 years of neglect.

THEN, train the dang thing. Start out w/this basic premise."I am the HUMAN,*you* are the DOG! Do as you're told."

I take it you never took that dog for obedience training. The dog believes he is your boss and unless you change it he will continue to think so.

yes they have tranqs its called ace or well thats the short term for it. call the vet and ask him about it sometimes they can write prescriptions for it

If your dog has had vaccines at the vet, that is why he won't get out of the car. It is well known that vaccines cause the dog to feel horrible for a week or two. Your dog is smart enough to know that and the vaccines are not necessary annually.

Spend some time with the yellow pages, most areas of the country have mobile pet groomers and a recent study of Vets show about 15% do house calls.

Yes, many groomers will refuse to do chows because of their reputation. I DO accept chows but of the 6 that I've had come in over my career, I've had to send 4 home without grooming (and I can handle very difficult dogs). The other two were very nice dogs.

No groomer should be giving your dog any kind of sedative. It is dangerous and unethical.

Ask your vet for a sedative so that you can get your dog into the clinic, then have them anesthetize him and shave him down. This will be the least stressful for all involved.

After that, he and you would likely benefit from some training, both in general obedience and in letting you handle him. If possible, start a grooming/brushing routine ASAP after the shave, so that he gets used to it BEFORE you have hair to deal with.

First of all GetEMGang is a freak. We could use some of his gestapo tactics in the military. It Is NOT your fault. I applaud youfor taking ina homeless dog that has obvious problems and working through it. Most people would have given the dog up.

Like the NORMAL people here, Iwould suggest finding a vet that comes to the house. If not, could you try th animal shelter vets? They are probably used to dogs with this kind of trouble. I would also think theat the tranquilizers are safe. I would not normally suggest this, but in this case, it may be for the best. I think you are a great person for wanting to take care of this poor dog. He has a terriffic owner now. Good luck.

Chows can be really mean if they don't want to be handled. Take him to the vet - they have plenty of experience handling nasty dogs. They can tranquilize him and shave off the matted coat. Washing a dog without properly drying him is a recipe for disaster. He may have serious skin problems (fungal infections or even sores and maggots) underneath from years of neglect. I know why groomers won't touch him, but I don't know why you think you can't get him to the vet? If you have a car, open both back doors. Throw his leash across the back seat and have someone else pull him in while you boost his back end up.

If you don't take care of him, you could be cited and fined for animal cruelty, even though you are trying to do the right thing.
