My dog keeps chewing at his leg?

My dog keeps chewing at the top of his leg. Where he is chewing the hair has come away and a big red scab has been left behind which he still keeps chewing at, I now have been told by a brother in law who has just checked up on him that he is not walking properly on it. Whta can this be?? Ihave him booked in at the vets later to have it checked out.

There could be several reasons why your dog is chewing his leg. First, of course, there could be a physical reason such as a skin condition that can be treated with medication. Your dog could have a "hot spot" which makes him chew that area. Here is a link with information about hot spots: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?...

Also, a dog will lick or chew its own legs as a nervous habit. Or out of boredom if they are not getting sufficient exercise and stimulation. But, of course your best course of action is a visit to the vet. I'm glad to see that you are already doing that. Good luck!

Teach him not to chew his leg and then take him to a good and trustworthy vet (not to all. It isn't more effective)

dogs chew on any part of their body that is uncomfortable. His joint might be in pain and so he is chewing or he could have a topical allergy that he has chewed to the point where he has done muscle damage. Get him in and get xrays done. If nothing is found try adding some fish oil or flax seed oil to his food. this will make the skin feel better.

Look, until you get to the vet, put some vaseline on the scab and i mean A LOT, and i promise he won't go to quick back to biting it.

My dog used to do the same thing. It turned out to be she had arthritis. The licking and biting, I guess, made it feel better. We never got the wound healed up, but put her on arthritis medication that the vet prescribed. The dog may also have a skin infection or allergies. The dog needs to go to the vet.
