Test to see what kind of dog u have....?

one of my family members adopted a dog from the humane society. they said he was part shar-pei and pit bull. so they wanted to see what his real breed was... they did the test that u had to send in a piece of hair?!? and when the test came back it said that he was part chihuahua. and he is a huge dog! hes maybe 90-100 lbs. or more. so i know he aint no chihuahua. but everyone knows that hes is definitly pit. i dont have any pics. they live too far maybe by xmas time i will. and the test for that cost $75. and there mad that they paid 75 and had to wait like 2 months to get the results back and to find that somewhere along the lines hes part chihuahua!

has anything like this happened to u? or anyone u know?

they got the dog like maybe a year ago. and they named him Bruno! hes a really nice dog and he likes everyone. hes not food agressive or anything. he likes other dogs too!

There are a few companies that do DNA testing. One is a cheek cell test that you can collect at home and the other is a blood test.

I guess you could do one using the hair follicle.

" Primary 閳?This category is intended to help owners recognize when their pet閳ユ獨 DNA contains a majority of a specific breed (i.e. 50% or greater). If your dog has a strong match to one of our 38 breeds, then it is categorized as primary. Most mixed breed dogs will not usually have a breed in this category unless one or both of their parents are purebred.

Secondary 閳?This category reports breeds that are easily recognizable within your dog. While these breeds may have a strong influence on your pet, each breed listed makes up less than the majority of your dog閳ユ獨 DNA.

In the Mix 閳?This final category identifies breeds that have the least amount of influence on your pet閳ユ獨 composition, however, they still appear, at a low and measurable amount, in your pet閳ユ獨 DNA. "

Part Chihuahua does not mean that one parent was a Chihuhua, it means that the markers for that breed were present somewhere in your dog's past.

I do not know how accurate these tests are as all of this is very new. It is interesting that, if these tests are reliable, you cannot tell a dog's parentage just by the way he looks.

if everyone is happy with the dog who cares what breed it is or isn't, love what you've got...the dog deserves it.

A male chihuahua could get a female pit pregnant. What is scarry is if a pit got a chihuahua pregnant the chi would have died giving birth there is no doubt about that.

Every single dog in the world comes from one dog. They are all dogs.

Breeds are made by inbreeding and so on. So this test they are talking about is either one a scam or two very much still in the testing stages.

i HAVE SEEN VERY LARGE DOGS HAVE CHIHUAHUA. I have seen a female GS and a male chihuahua get together.

The test you are talking about is DNA testing. It is used on humans also in criminal investigations to determine who the rapist or murder is. It is not imposible for a male chihuahua to mate with a female pit bull or shar-pei. Of course your family's dog would be large, but could still easily have a chi for the father. Hope this helps.

These DNA tests are now widely available and are accurate. A dog may have a breed in it's ancestry but look nothing like that breed. All dogs came from the same original source, just as all people came from the same original source. Go to the mall one day and do a little people watching--you'd be amazed at all the different shapes, sizes, and color combinations that people come in, yet they all descend from the original "Adam and Eve". My own sons, from the same parents, don't look like they're from the same "breed"--one is 6'2", thin, with thin, light sandy blond hair and fair skin, and the other is 5'6", thick black hair, stocky, and olive skin. Same thing with dogs. It's not a scam--even "pure bred", registered dogs will have other DNA, because today's "pure breeds" are mixtures from other dogs and other breeds, before we had the AKC or other dog registries or have been purposefully mixed and created as new breeds. I just can't understand why anyone would waste $75 to find this out--it won't change the dog.

This is neither a scam nor in the testing stages. You should not answer question without some knowledge of the subject matter.

Yes, they all come from one dog far, far back evolutionarily. But the differences in breds is obviously coded into DNA. For instance, humans all originate from common ancestry, but DNA testing can distinguish a white man from an Asian man from a black man, etc. It's the same concept. Btw, two versions of this test exist: a blood test and a saliva trst.

I don't trust these breed tests. I have never heard of one where you test a piece of hair, but I know there is a blood test out now that is like $150 to test and see what breeds your dog is mixed with. BUT, it only tests for AKC breeds. And Pit Bulls (American Pit Bull Terrier) is not recognized by the AKC, so if your dog is part Pit Bull, American Bulldog, Dogo, or any of the non-AKC breeds, you are wasting your money, you won't find out any useful information. So I think it is best to just guess on your own. It won't make a difference if you find out what he is mixed with anyways.

I have an Alaskan Malamute. I love this breed because they are very docile and loving. Her name is Ginger.
