German police dog?

i just asked a question about a german police dog my mother had when she was young a little while ago but i have new info.

they say that it was a pure bred german police dog like that was what the breed was called. they had him in the 60's he was a bit smaller than a german shepherd and was mostly black he had short sleak hair and was taller than a german shepherd. my first reaction was that its a doberman but she says he looked nothing like a doberman and looked more shepherd than doberman. i think that it must have been a mutt but she says it was a real breed does anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

German police dog?

I think it must've been a mutt too, or else she's just mistaken. There is no breed called "German Police Dog" and to me what you're describing sounds (mostly) like a Beauceron: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beauceron

Edit: Thought so. Bassetnut is right, they're French. Glad I could help!

German police dog?

Yeah, but a Beauceron is French.

A lot of people used to call German Shepherds "police dogs". The one your mother had may simply not have been a good specimen, they are (and were) a very popular breed and there are lots of bad breeders out there.

Belgian Malinois is a very commonly used police dog. It looks like a GSD but sleeker. It's face is dark but the rest of it is usually tan to redish brown.

Don't forget the dogs of the 60s were way different than the GSD now. They were NOT the giants you see alot of people calling 'old style'. Actually, the breed founder called a 24 inch male very large at one point (it's in a book of his)! They were also much leggier with straighter stifles. Being solid black is not uncommon in GSD. It's a perfectly normal color for them and always has been. Here is a site that shows how the shepherd has been changing through the years.
