Trying to find the perfect breed of dog...?

I am looking for a dog that gets no bigger than 20-30 lbs, short hair, and dosent shed too much. I like the idea of a Basenji as they dont smell either, but I cannot find a cheap one. Any ideas of dogs that fit my requirements?

Jenny had it right....look into the temperaments and personalities of the breeds too. There are lots of breeds of dogs that get no larger than 30 lbs, have short hair, and don't shed a lot. However, there are tons of other things you need to decide. Do you want an active dog or a couch potato? Do you want a dog that needs hours of exercise or one that will be content with an evening walk. Do you want a dog that you can take hiking off leash with? A dog that will get along with other dogs? A dog that can live with a cat?

I can say a Basenji is a DIFFICULT dog to live with. Research this breed before you decide.

And also look at the Italian Greyhound, Whippet, Boston Terrier, Dachsund....all nice breeds, but all very different personalities.

You could make a fast friend and adopt a greyhound.

I was able to find the perfect dog for me on this website. They have a number of questions to help you find your new love:

Possibly a Basenji cross??? I have a rat terrier/chihuahua mix that doesn't shed too much...and they range in weight from 10-15lbs. Good luck!!!

You might want to try a beagle. I had one as a kid and I loved it. But this would not be an ideal dog if you live in a small area because they are semi hyperactive dogs. Depending on where you live you could look on www.craigslist.com and check out the pet area. On there you could find a dog that needs to be rehomed or you could find a puppy. Good luck in your pooch search!

its a quiz to determine your right pooch.

i think u should get a basenji because that breed of dog is like a cats. it doesnt shed a lot, it doesnt bark a lot, short hair, light weight, and can clean itself.

there's another pick which is a shiba inu.

A shih tzu is a great pet!!!!!! They do not get bigger than 20-25 lbs. They have HAIR so they DON'T SHED!!!

If you live in Texas(or near) here is a website

Have you tried Basenji rescue?

Any dog will "smell" if you don't give them baths regularly. Some breeds do smell a little bit more, but mostly can be controlled with grooming. A dog that is about 20-30 pounds that doesn't shed too much actually fits a lot of smaller breed dogs. Many terriers don't shed much, and poodles and bishon frise dogs don't shed at all. However, when there is no shedding, you need to keep their hair trimmed.

Try this website to look up different breeds of dogs: http://www.whosyadoggy.com/dog-breeds-no...

and when you're ready to get a dog or puppy, try looking on http://www.petfinder.com/ to find a puppy or doggy for you. (That way, it'll be cheaper AND you'll be supporting a rescue.) They have TONS of puppies and dogs that are of all sizes and breeds on there. Good luck.

Don't get a basenji unless you have a lot of time and patience for training. they are very smart dogs, but also very independent. they don't have a lot of drive for pleasing their owner, so they have to see what's in it for them. (This comes from the head of a basenji owners' group.) they are really funny (they are well known thieves!), but you have to have the right personality for them.

As you're looking at breeds, consider personality as well as the other factors.

Also, as someone noted, there are a lot of breed specific rescues.

Trying to find the perfect breed of dog...?

I have two shih tzu, one male and female. I would advise to get a male first, very easy to train. But you know they are the greatest dogs to have very well trained and very affectionate. By the way, they do not shed. You will just love them; fun to have around and they love to please you. They can run $300 up. Their weight is no more than 20-25lbs.

Trying to find the perfect breed of dog...?

Italian Greyhound Definitely! Fun to tote around adorable as puppies, and stay cute and cuddly. They love to be lazy on the couch with you and come with you where ever you go....quiet, never smell, short, short hair, and all smiles!

Trying to find the perfect breed of dog...?

I think the perfect one is a Miniature Schnauzer. They don't shed, rarely bark, are easy to train, and only weigh about 10-15 lbs. They are good with families and kids. They are also very loyal to there owner's. I also would check into recuing a Greyhound as they are usually abused and come with the marks to prove it. They are an inside dog, don't shed much, but would need at least a 6 ft. fence that the gate can't be accidently left open. You also shouldn't have them around rabbits as that is what they are trained to chase after. But they make a great family pet.

maybe a whippet or Basenji is nice

Trying to find the perfect breed of dog...?

Perfect breed of dog? There is no ONE perfect breed of dog. Each to their own but........

I do not feel your "description" above has anything to do with a "perfect" breed. What you need to consider more is TEMPERAMENT.

As others have mentioned, you may want to reconsider a Basenji. My limited experience with them has been at AKC Obedience trials. The first one simply ran out of the ring, across the entire park and out of view. The second, waiting to go in the ring was messing about and when the owner gave a mild leash correction it jumped up and bit her arm! And these were obedience trained dogs at a competition!!

Also, short hair, as in smooth coat, can somewhat eliminate "cold tolerant".

You need to rethink, and do some more research.

Trying to find the perfect breed of dog...?

Here is a list of short haired dogs less than 30 pounds at least somewhat tolerant of cold that you can find fairly cheap - either from breeders or in rescues - but note that you should not house any dog outside in the winter unless it is something like a husky -

Beagle

Pug

Rat terrier

Fox terrier

Jack Russell terrier

Boston terrier

Miniature Pincher

Note that beagles can be very loud, and all of the terriers, with the exception of the Boston, are very high energy dogs - which is ok if you are looking for a frisbee and running partner, but not good if you don't have time for long daily walks. As other stated, you should choose a dog on temperment more than appearance. The pug or Boston terrier doesn't need as much exercise, but not everyone likes the snub nose look. The only dogs that tend to be stinky more so than others are ones that are swimmers - like Newfoundlands and labs to a certain extent.

Best of luck in finding you rnew best friend!

Trying to find the perfect breed of dog...?

As a long time basenji owner, rescuer, and foster I strongly urge you to further research the breed before you get one. In my opinion they are the best dog out there :)...however, they are the highest maintainance breed that there is.

I've used this analogy before, and I want you to take it to heart: If you think that you're getting a barkless, shedless, clean, cat-like golden retriever, you are sorely mistaken. Think "spider monkey on crack", and you are much closer to what you will actually be living with. All of my cabinets have child locks. The trash can is locked in one of those cabinets. Some people have to get locks installed on their refridgerators. Even the people with the most well-behaved basenjis find that permanently installed baby gates are necessary to keep their basenji in the portion of the house that is "basenji proofed".

Look into the Italian Greyhounds. You can get them cheap through dog rescues because there are sooo many that need homes.

If you do decide on a basenji, like said earlier, go to basenjirescue.org, and look for a 2-3 year old. It's a good way to start without having the hardships of basenji puppy owning right off the bat. Also go to www.basenjicompanions.com and read read read. If you have more questions about the breed go to www.basenjiforums.com, and ask there.

As basenji owners we are not trying to scare you away from the breed. We want you to know what you are getting so you don't end up being the 10% of basenji owners that have to give up their dog because they are at wit's end.

For me, there is no other dog.
