While walking home from school I saw a lady with an afghan hound puppy that was about 6 months old. She said she was selling it for 25 dollars. I asked her why it was so cheap and she said that he wasnt show material because of his coat and behavior(He is not in any way independent and very latchy and learns really quickly and enjoys doing tricks. His hair is also kind of odd looking.) Why would a person give a dog away just because he is different? Do dogs really lose points for acting differently from others in dog shows?
Dog show and afghan honds question?
She was pulling your leg.. She likely doesn't show at all.. There are pet quality and show quality... He is obviously pet quality. If she is breeding for show, good temperament and good health, he is still valuable as a pet quality afghan. No one would give away a pup for $25 just cause he wouldn't do well in the ring.
There is a standard for each legitimate breed.. The dogs must conform as close as possible to the standard.. Depending on the deviation ( or fault ) from the standard, there are points that are lost.. The more points against the dog, well.. he isn't going to cut it when he goes up against dogs that are better quality than he is.
A low tail isn't good, but it won't be a problem for a dog in a pet home.. You likely wouldn't know whether your dog's tailset was low or not.. A breeder would.. The judge would.. But a pet owner in most cases isn't at all aware of the things that is wrong with their dog that makes him a pet.. Might be a missing tooth, might be light eyes, might be low tail or lack of forechest.. Nothing you would know, but the breeder wouldn't want to breed..
If a breed is supposed to be a certain way, then they would certainly lose points.. A shy dog would lose points an aggressive dog would lose points. Depends on their standard and what they are expected to be like.. Some breeds are supposed to be aloof.. Some are allowed to be dog aggressive but could never be aggressive to handler or judge..
Read the standard and find out what the dogs are supposed to be like.
Dog show and afghan honds question?
Perhaps she was focusing more on show dogs rather than pet quality dogs. Wow - that's a steal. He sounds like a great dog, but perhaps not the example of the breed she was looking for.
Part of the breed standard is how the dog acts, not just how it looks. For example, a clingy Afghan Hound probably wouldn't be as good of a hunter - hounds are supposed to be independent and stubborn. It makes for better hunting. If a hound acts like a retriever, it's not suited for the job it was bred to do.

They can be faulted for acting the wrong way BUT I've never heard of it. This person is most likly a BYB anyway.
Dog show and afghan honds question?
In the breed standards it is stated how a breeds temperment should be and yes they can be faulted if they have the wrong temperment.
As for $25 this sounds way wrong even for a pet quality afghan, makes me wonder what else is wrong that she didn't tell you about. Such as health.
Dog show and afghan honds question?
25 is very cheap even for the castaways from a show quality breeder. I would be very weary of this. There might be other underlying problems. A breeder that is that concerned about the quality of the dogs she breeds will require you to neuter that dog because it is unstable and because it has a crap coat, and won't let it go for so little.
Dog show and afghan honds question?
Dog shows are all about the dog who is closest to the 'breed standard' and that means that dog's who don't have a correct coat or attitude will not win against dogs who do.
It is a shame that this person who is obviously in the dog show world cares so little for a dog she has bred to (no offence) just offer it to anyone on the street - especially someone still at school.
If she can't show him %26amp; has other dogs that she want's to spend time with in the ring, she obviously doesn't want him, but the cost is so cheap it sounds suspicious - I would ask for his pedigree papers %26amp; investigate her kennel name before taking the dog %26amp; also definately get him vet checked immdeiately.
Dog show and afghan honds question?
No show breeder sells purebred Afghan Hounds on the street for $25. It sounds like someone found the dog or their dog had an accidental litter and they were looking to get rid of it and made up a story.
If the dog has "odd" coat, it is probably a mix. Nothing wrong with being a mix, but it makes me mad that someone tried to tell you the dog was being dumped from a "show" kennel.
Show quality Afghan puppies are stand outs in coat and structure and MOVEMENT. Just looking pretty does not a show dog make. Temperament does play a part, but mainly that they not be so shy or so aggressive the judge can't touch them. A true show breeder sells their PET quality puppies usually on a spay/neuter contract. Since if they are not show quality, they probably aren't breeding quality either ( there are exceptions to this, but I'm talking normally).
Google some pics of Afghans or go see some at a local dog show...akc.org has show info.
