I want a dog for my 16th birthday. I've been looking at king charles spaniels but im not sure because they have long hair and might need a lot of grooming. I can walk the dog everyday after school but can i leave it at home for the time im gone - about 6-8 hours. I live with my dad but he is out all day. I also dont want a dog that will cost a lot.
Can anyone help me?

Go to your local animal shelter, you will only have to pay a donation and you would be giving a loving dog a home.

Go to the pound and look at all the dogs there. Also look on petfinder.org and look for all the rescues in your area. A dog (not a puppy) should be alright alone from 6-8 hours a day, but you should probably crate train them to be sure of this. Good luck, and make sure you really research into owning a dog before you get one.. they're a lot of work. Also remember that you may be going to college in a few years, and you won't be able to take your dog with you if you have to live in the dorms.

Get an italian greyhound..their expensive, lovable, easy to train, and very fun to dress up, I named my Issabella

First, does your dad want a dog also? Secondly, if you are both gone for that long each day- you don't need a puppy because they need so much attention all day for the first few months.
I would go to the humane society or your local shelter and find a dog who is already housebroken and a little older (just not a young puppy).

You said you don't want a dog that will cost a lot. Do you mean to purchase or to keep? The King Charles Spaniels are quite pricey even if you are just buying a pet. You could get lucky and find one for less than $1,000 but I would be concerned about it's background..... You want to get a healthy, sound dog that is a nice example of what they should be.
You might want to consider getting a little older dog and not a puppy. A puppy cannot hold it's bladder or bowels for 6-8 hours. It just wouldn't be fair to a pup to expect it to be able to do this or to expect it to house train quickly (especially if there is no one there during the day to train it).
Go to your local Animal Control or Humane Society or rescue groups. Get a nice dog that is 2 - 4 years of age that is settled, calm and able to hold it's potty trips until you get home.
Do not give a new dog free run of the house when no one is home, you will want to crate train it. This is for your benefit and the dogs'.

Because of your Dad's Schedule %26amp; your own I would advise you not to get a dog right now, although dogs can easily be left alone for the time span you are stateing...it will be a new dog in a new home, if it is a pup it neds alot of beginning training %26amp; if it is a rescue it will need extra attetion.
I know they are great pets but they need alot of attention, Your 16 enjoy life and as you get older you will be able to get a dog %26amp; manage your time for it much better.
GOOD LUCK no matter what you decide to do

Getting a dog is an exciting experience, but all dogs are in need of attention. Some take the separation better than others but in most cases the biggest issue is that dogs are being left alone and they act out. eventually are being rehomed and given up for adoption because their owners dont understand the importance of proper training and time to be spend with the dog. If you decided to get a puppy, best time to get one is during summer when you have time to train it and spend and obseve its behavior. Some dogs do ok alone for 6 to 8 hours but then you have to make up for it. Best way is to krate them and give them toys to play and most important is to have him on schedule. His eating must be way before you leave so he has time to digest and go to the bathroom. Also remember that well trained dog is the best dog. PLease make your decision wisely and not be selfish. just because you think you have time, doesnt mean you actually will. Each dog needs an excersize so walking once a day may not be enough for some dogs.

I have Papillons and just play ball with them about 5 times a day so i had no need to take them for a walk but of course i do.It is not wise to get a puppy as it needs potty training and would be on it,s own far to long and that is when they start chewing. If i where you i would wait till you are older as it is a great responsibility or maybe you could get an older dog but yet again it will be left on it,s own.Think long term but most of all think of the dog and how lonely it will be.

Wait another few more years. Dogs will require your attention, walking and grooming, it is not nice to leave a dog locked up alone for 6 - 8 hours daily. Your dog will cost you money. Recommend you wait a few more years when you can appreciate more what is involved.

King Charles Spaniels kcs r working dogs so they need lots of exercise. perhaps u could adopt an older dog who has been crate trained. but even then, u would need to come straight home from school to let it out and exercise it. It is cruel to get a puppy. as a rule they can hold it for 1 hr for every mo old they are. if the puppy is only 3 months old it can only be expected to hold it for 3 hours. an adult will hold it for 6 to 8 hrs but please, no longer. maybe u should consider a cat. they are very loving but dont require so much time. and keep the dream of a dog until u r in a psition to tke the best of care of tthem
They are expensive and require a lot of grooming and care. u would also have to get up early in the morning to take her out before ya go to school, as she has waited all night too.

Dogs shouldn't be left for that length of time. They need a pee and poo like people do and they need company just think what you would feel like shut up on your own everyday for that time and you couldn't play music, watch TV, phone someone, read a book or do anything to relieve the boredom. In a couple of years time you might be away at Uni or collage or your social life will take first place I know that's not what you think now but it will and its not fair on the dog.

Dogs are a lot of responsibility.
If you are going to be gone for that long you certainly do not want to get a puppy.
Both of you need to want a dog!
If your dad doesn't then you need to ask yourself this...what is going to happen to the dog when you graduate HS? They don't allow dogs in dorms?
Don't think about what you want today just because it will be fun, this is at least a 10year commitment if not more.
If both of you want one then go for it!
Check out the humane society's!!!

In your circumstances I wouldn't recommend you get a dog of any kind just now. I'd wait a few years. Dogs are pack animals and have needs I don't think you can priovide.
1 A puppy needs lots of attention and can't be left for such long periods of time!
2 An older 'rescue' dog would find it hard to settle into your home without someone around at least part of the day.
3 All dogs cost a lot, there's the initial costs, purchase price KCK's are at least 鎷?00 ($1,000), the Vet fees for Vaccinations, worm %26amp; flea treatments and neutering/spaying. Equipment like bedding crates toys etc, then the on going expenes, Insurance premiums or savings put aside in case of illness or accident %26amp; food bills!
4 As you're only 16 it would be your Dad who would be paying the bills so he'll need to want it as much as you do. (what happens if you decide to go to college or university)
Dog problems......?
i would recommend that u dont get a dog just yet! its not fair to leave them at home all day on their own.
i dont mean to put a downer on the situation or anything but would u like to be left at home with nothing to do for 8 hours a day with no body else around!!
